The decrease in Innings by Starting Pitchers is striking - from the Games that I have seen, it seems likely everyone is in the Dusty Baker / Russ Ortiz mode of pulling Starters, even when they are going pretty well. There was the weird Scherzer incident (Dusty, again), but also pulling Lester really early & a few other odd decisions to pull Starters early.
Sergio Romo [luckily] sucked as a Dodger, but bounced back nicely as a Ray. Despite the horrid start, his full-season numbers really weren't too bad. We need Relief Pitchers. Do we go there? It wouldn't bother me, if we did. Sucking as a Dodger actually makes Romo even more endearing, which seemed impossible.
It's a bullpen game, for sure. LA has a huge edge over Chicago, as does NY over Houston in that department. LA and NY only expect 5 from their starters, even Kershaw will likely not go past the 6th inning. And when it takes 100 pitches to get 18 outs it's not surprising that uber-bullpens are the new hot thing.
I didn't realize Romo had popped up with Tampa Bay. I lost track of him after the Dodgers stint. Numbers, as you say, look like old Sergio. He's a free agent, why not?
They are a put-the-ball-in-play kind of team, basically. This is a TTO (three true outcomes: K, BB, HR) game these days. Giants like that style, too. They just couldn't hit this season! Also, even if you don't read the article look at the graph.
Astros bullpen had a meltdown tonight and blew a 4-0 lead. They could have put the damn series on ice but now it's wide open. Too bad. I'm still holding out for a not-Dodgers vs. not-Yankees!
speaking of number of pitches, late in the season Cueto was tossing a lot of pitches per inning. dodgers pen threw a lot of innings, and one would have thought it might catch up with them. Instead, they kept coming up with new arms.
data looks compelling for 2010,2012, and 2014. wonder what the giants brass thinks of that?

Why we should be rooting for Houston.

I meant the Giants like the Astros-style put-it-in-play, not TTO.
ReplyDeleteLooks like it could be a Yankees/Dodgers World Series. Two of my favorite teams.
ReplyDeleteNOT!
UGH!
