Saw this a few days ago - looks to be photo-shopped. Hopefully not.I have more amazing news from Latin American Sports (my new favorite TV station). They have games from Cuba, Puerto Rico, & Mexico. Things are really heating up, with the Caribbean Series starting & all.On Sunday, I watched nearly the entire game between Industriales & Villa Clara from the Cuban League. It turns out that the game took place on Saturday (box score can be found here http://www.beisbolencuba.com/series/serie-nacional-beisbol-2013-2014/segunda-fase/industriales-contra-villa-clara-1.html).It also turns out that the broadcast is a real Cuban broadcast on TeleRebelde, Cuba's second largest TV station (read about that station here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tele_Rebelde). The station's logo was in the corner of the screen during the game. The post-game credits further identified this as a legit Cuban TV broadcast.Does anyone else find it bizarre that such a thing is possible?Among many other interesting things I learned:- Yulieski Gourriel, 3B for Industriales, is currently regarded as the top Cuban player. He slugged an impressive HR during the game. He is the Son of Lourdes Gourriel, a former Cuban great. He was rumored to have defected after the 2006 WBC, but it turned out to be untrue.- His Brother, Lourdes Yunior Gourriel, SS, plays on this team. - Other Brother, Yunieski Gourriel, CF, also plays on the same team.- There are no advertisements anywhere in the stadium.- The stadium, El Estadio Latinoamericano, is shared by Industriales & Metropolitanos- The Home Team's dugout is labeled 'Home Club' (not 'Club de Casa', but 'Home Club').- Industriales are pretty much the Yankees of Cuba, usually acquiring most of the top players & winning many league championships. People either love them or hate them. Villa Clara has won a few titles over the years, although Industriales' main competition is the team from Santiago de Cuba.- The announcers often use baseball expressions in English, even when there are Spanish versions of those same expressions used in other countries such as Mexico & Puerto Rico.- Note in the box score that 8 out of the 26 players who played in the game have first names starting with the letter 'Y'.- The first name of the Industriales LF is written 'Stayler', but pronounced 'Tyler'. In 5 plate appearances, he had 3 walks & a 3B.- Industriales actually does have a giant-sized lion mascot.
C'mon, let's think positively, the Panda is a big part of the 2014 resurgence!!
And the news this morning is that Masahiro Tanaka is a Yankee. His contract (including the posting fee) is for considerably less than Clayton Kershaw's. I do not for a minute believe that indicates that Los Angeles' resources have been sapped.
It would be pretty sad if he photoshopped it, but Pablo has been releasing photos of his new and changed physique, and in any case, he'll be in public view soon, so it would be moronic on his part to do trickery like that, especially since he had already lost a lot of weight at the end of the 2013 season that reporters noted.I expect Pablo to deliver a season like 2011, though probably missing 2-4 weeks due to one injury or another, he just seems to get something every year.Basically the Yanks are paying $25M per year for Tanaka. I would have been really shocked if he had signed for Kershaw money, Kershaw is a proven ace, Tanaka is only scouted to be one, how he turns out is still a big question mark. That said, $25M is usually only given to proven aces even before Kershaw's deal. Hate to wish bad on anyone, but it would serve the Yankees right if this is the new Zito contract.
Tanaka is not on the Dodgers. That is the best news of 2014 season! And keep on rockin', Panda!
New Giant Minor League signing Mario Lisson played part of 2013 for Los Guerreros de Oaxaca! Had 10 HR's in 16 games in recent Venezuelan League round robin playoff (Sandoval & Machi were his teammates). The next Randy Elliott, or something much, much better?
Pablo wants to show up, field well, be able to take 2B consistently... that'd be just awlright with me!I enjoyed the Cuban news Ron. Thanks.
Giants reach a deal for Huff!http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/sf/giants-acquire-left-hander-david-huff-from-yankees-for-cash?ymd=20140124&content_id=67100482&vkey=news_sf
STOCK UP ON LEFTIES!!Huff will need some Righetti-whispering as his career numbers aren't very inspiring, but the Giants are good at finding diamonds in the rough.
I don't know how good Rags is with lefties, on the plus side, we have Bumgarner, and he had Sanchez pitching a no hitter, but he could not get Zito or Sanchez to be consistent, and Affeldt is certainly not. Mijares started to tank as a giant. Runzler got worse under Rags, so I am not so sure. We will see. I like Rags and hope the giants keep him, but he does not seem to be able to perform long term baseball miracles.
