. . . and Chris Heston is not

The right-hander was traded this evening for a Player To Be Named Later. I suppose this move makes a spot on the 40-man for Mark Melancon. Adios, Chris Heston. Thanks for suiting up in San Francisco. We won't forget the  ninth and most recent SF no-hitter. Best of luck--except of course when pitching against the Giants.

The Chronicle also says that it was to clear space on the 40 man. Seems the Giants must have lost faith in the young man, or perhaps he was simply by-passed by a whole bunch of other young pitchers. Trading him for a PTBNL doesn't seem like much for a guy with a no-hitter on his resume.

Chapman back to the Bronx at 5 yrs/$86M. Jansen is rumored to have a 5/80 offer from Miami. Looks like BobbyE was smart to grab his guy first.

As far as Heston goes, it seems his poor performance as a 28-year old in AAA Sacto was enough reason. To be fair, he struggled with his health, particularly an oblique injury which had to seriously diminish what he could do. He's at that "fish or cut bait" point in his career. Giants are usually right when it comes to parting with pitching talent. They usually keep the right guys and let the ones go that won't come back to hurt them. Exceptions, of course, but overall true. And the Giants are also still invested in Matt Cain (they can buy him out next year) which means that other fifth starter/long relief guys are on the bubble. With the young talent getting ready to emerge, in particular Ty Blach, it seems not so surprising that Heston got cut loose. Can't seem to find if the PTBNL has been N'd.

2017 is big with the Cueto opt-out looming for 2018. Melancon should make a huge impact. Time to take back the West. I'm tired of LA in first place--that should be SF territory!

If you were to re-sign one of either Romo, or Casilla , which one would you rather sign? I think if Romo were to be used as a Roogy, he would still be extremely effective. I prefer the control of Romo, over the power of Casilla. Note that certain lefties own one or the other of these guys. Of course with all that said, it could depend on the price as far as management is concerned.

Tough question. As a fan--Romo. But I think Casilla is a more versatile pitcher. I worry Romo has become too reliant on his magic pitch. Casilla has a repertoire, and can get more guys out. But Romo is a huge presence, people love him. He got the biggest ovation when the Giants played at Raley Field last spring. I agree--who ever takes the biggest pay cut will stick!

About the PTBNL for Heston: I read that the Giants would have had to release Heston (DFA him? I'm unsure) with no recompense if they had not traded him, hence the probably paltry return. My assumption is that they thought that since he seemed to be blocked or logjammed by other pitchers, the best thing for him would be to go to another club, where he had a shot at getting into the rotation. What they did, then, looked like the best mutually advantageous maneuver, for his sake and the team's.

Andres Torres lost his wife Soannie to cancer. I don't know if you guys saw that story. Andres was perhaps the most likeable ballplayer I've ever followed. And he was a massive contributor to the 2010 team. Sad news.

In the good news department, massive snowfall all over the PNW this weekend. Should be a powder day at Mt Ashland tomorrow!

Sad news about Andres Torres & his Wife. He definitely ranks up there among the most likable ex-Giants.

Appears that Jansen stays with LA at 5y/$80M and Turner likely to follow at 4y/$64M.
