Wood, Doval sparkle in win

SF 7  COL 3

The Giants complete a 5-2 homestand by taking the rubber match against the Rockies. Alex Wood was perfect through four, gave up a walk in the 5th, and a two-out double in the 6th. In the 7th a leadoff walk and a bunch of dinkers put a run across and loaded the bases with no outs. The Giants were up 4-1 at the time and Kap summoned rookie Camilo Doval to snuff out the rally. He gave up a run on a double-play grounder, then walked a batter, then got a comebacker. It was a huge moment and the kid delivered. Wow! I'm not sure I would have thrown the youngster out there in that situation but they like Doval and they obviously have confidence in him. The Giants tacked on three in the bottom of the 7th to make it 7-2 and we all breathed easier. Caleb Baragar hadn't pitched in a week (how is that possible?) but survived a hit and a walk and some hard-hit balls, and Matt Wisler took the 9th. He gave up a run but finished the game with a strikeout and a pop-out.

Rockies pitchers threw 189 pitches. The Giants are really good at that--they make teams throw a lot of pitches. FNG Mike Tauchman had three hits. Wood's final line was 6+ IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 SO on 97 pitches--he's been great in all three starts. He did get thrown out on the bases, apparently trying to steal third base, but it didn't hurt the team. The last Giants pitcher thrown out trying to steal third base? Mike Krukow on April 23rd, 1985, in a complete game 2-1 win over Fernando Valenzuela and the Dodgers.

Off-day tomorrow and then off to San Diego for a real test against a high-powered team. It was supposed to be Kevin Gausman against Yu Darvish on Friday, but it looks like Gausman will be pushed back to Sunday as he's dealing with some groin issue. Logan Webb will get the start with Anthony DeScalfani going Saturday. Mike Yastrzemski goes to the 10-day IL.

Go Giants!

So many injuries. Looks as if our starter, who had given up a lead off dinger vs the fish, then went 7 innings without giving up another hit. He went around 5 hitless today, making that around 36 outs without a hit. Then just like when Petit lost his no hitter in front of Pence in right field, Alex lost his in from of Ruf. Of course Petit's was in the 9th inning which makes it quite different. But it was a nice streak. He seemed to lose a bit of his pin point control in the 7th inning but only one hit was hit hard, as there was a blooper, and an infield hit. Of course a walk did not help. We seemed to have gotten him at a much cheaper price than Bumgarner. Quest is, can he stay healthy. Good giants debut for Tauchman. May not bode well for lefty center fielders in the pipeline.

I should note that lefty reliever Sam Selman joins the team. And switch-hitting OF Skye Bolt has seen some game time the last two nights. Skye Bolt is a seriously great baseball name, don't you think?

Santos is back to Sacramento.

Bolt would be a great name for a track star 100 meter sprinter. I do not know how Duggar will be affected by the Tauchman trade. Maybe he will be the player to be named later?

Yeah Duggar, Davis, Wade, all those guys just got knocked back a peg with Tauchman coming on board. Hey, if you have talent in the minors chomping at the bit to get to the majors that's good. That's how it is supposed to work!

Usually PTBNL are not 40-man roster types. They are usually guys further back in the pipeline, but I'm not about to guess who it will be. One thing about FZ and Harris is they do things their own way and have their own internal evaluation scheme so outsiders like me can only stand back and scratch our heads. It seems weird to trade for a guy after one month of play but, what do I know?

They said publicly that Tauchman was a "long-term move" and not just a response to the Yaz injury. Sure, OK. I don't know if that's true or just PR, but Tauchman is under team control for three seasons, and I know they like that.

Kervin Castro has apparently joined the team in San Diego. No word as to whether he will be activated, but it's a good bet he will be.

Like Santos and Doval he's young (22) and on the "fast track" as he was added to the 40-man this spring despite less than 100 IP in the minors (A- was his highest level).

Giants have some needs in the 'pen, obviously, and I'm happy the phenoms are getting their opportunities.

Shows you what I know. They DFA Skye Bolt and send Jason Vosler to the alternate site although he's on the taxi squad this weekend.

They call up RHP Zack Littell. I did not see that coming. He has ML experience (Twins) and had a decent year in relief in 2019.

My theory that San Diego continues to get the calls, seems to be proven. I was happy in the Padre Dodger series that the Pads seemed to get the calls, but it carried over. I am waiting for LaStella to impress me on either side of the plate. I do not know why that first run was not an error by LaStella. The guy scored from second because he blew the play. Yes, it was a hard play to get the out, but the extra bobble and inability to grab the ball cost us a run. That run should not be on Web. Could have been ruled an infield hit, and an error for allowing the run to score. Flores had the bat taken out of his hands in the ninth. 3 pitches, each considerably outside called strikes. How many times when Melancon pitched for the Giants was he squeezed? If umpires can be fined, this ump needs to be fined for his calls on the Flores at bat. A few calls went our way, but more did not. Unfortunately one that went our way was reversed and that was the grand slam by Ruf. Fairly sure that the giants who had runners on base all night, did not get a hit with runners in scoring position. Oddly, several of those AB's were taken right out of the giants hitters hands. That is not to take away from the masterful pitching of Darvish. He did have some help and he took full advantage of it. At the end of the day the giants hold on to first, as the bums lost. Arizona and the Padres are tightening things up. Of course the Rockies could not go 0-81 on the road, but I think their only road win this year came against the giants. Hoping for a better outcome tomorrow, so that Sunday's game will have the excitement of being a rubber game.
