The Giants bullpen had another meltdown, this time blowing a 6-2 lead and losing 8-6 to the Pirates. It was ugly. It's obviously the Achilles Heel of the team. Maybe they have a plan to fix it. I hope so. I don't really want to cover the particulars, it's a little too painful. For all the good this team is doing, these late-inning disasters, blowing chow in spectacular fashion, are hard to take!
Alex Wood goes tomorrow morning (10:05 Pacific) in the getaway game.
Go Giants!

Of course I have to find something positive about the debacle. The Giants scored six runs. That's positive.
Not sure what pitchers were not feeling great today, but it seemed like the killer instinct in shutting down the Pirates was not there. Instead there was an experiment to see what some of the young guys could do with a 4 run lead. It reminds me of Dusty, managing for the season and looking at different parts of the season as similar to a quarter in a football game. I thought Alou managed with a killer instinct with the approach that a win at any time of the season is as good as any other, and if you have a win in site, you go for it. Giants may lead the majors in blowing 4 run leads from the 7th inning on. Or turning 4 run leads into losses. And despite that they are still in first place. They just have too many losses this season like today's to be a long term contender. Maybe this will wake up the top brass to realize that we need to upgrade the bullpen. Yesterday I watched Tampa in a close game with the Mets open it up, essentially by hitting against the shift. It worked. Seems as if the Pirates are not beneath that strategy at this point. Giants seem to be going for the long ball, even when there are runners in scoring position and one run is needed. After looking fantastic in the first few weeks of the season, Longoria is starting to look like a rally killer. I hope he turns it back around. Fantasy leagues had Longo as a top pick vs Anderson today, but that did not work out. They also had the giants behind Gausman as a top pick for a win Friday. Best to bet against the obvious predictions. Posey is on a pace to play in 106-107 games this season. Not sure what his health is but that is not enough. Casali, has forgotten how to hit. He is now 5 for 50. Padres are doing fine without their several of their stars out of the line-up due to illness.
The team played great in the field overall. You hate to see good performances wasted. Darin Ruf was a beast with the bat but also throwing out baserunners!
