Paul Goldschmidt continued his mastery of the Giants with four hits and two homers last night. He came up in the 9th with the bases loaded and one out and the Cardinals down by four but hit the first pitch he saw from Camilo Doval to Thairo Estrada who started a game-ending double play. Everything else went the Giants way, too. Anthony DeSclafani had another good start, giving up two runs (the Goldy homers) and fanning six over six innings. Tristan Beck and Tyler Rogers (who has allowed only one run in 12 appearances) took care of the 7th and 8th but Sean Hjelle had a terrible 9th and had to be bailed out by Doval despite entering the game with a 5-run lead.
Lefty Steven Matz held the Giants at bay until the 4th when LaMonte Wade, Jr. homered to start the inning. Blake Sabol got a hit, stole second, and scored on a hit by Austin Slater. Mitch Haniger singled off reliever Jordan Hicks in the 5th and scored the go-ahead run after an error and a wild pitch. Haniger walked in the 7th and scored on a homer from Wilmer Flores. In the 8th Michael Conforto drove in Thairo Estrada who led off the frame with a double, and Conforto scored on Wade's triple. It was a good showing by the lineup and they had enough cushion to survive the Cardinals last-gasp rally.
The 11-13 Giants are two games off the pace in the West (Arizona is on top at 14-12). They have improved their home record to 7-6 and have a chance this afternoon (12:45 PT) to complete a four-game sweep. Logan Webb gets the start.
Go Giants!

Streak snapped. Webb gave up another homer. Myles Mikolas is really good but has been out-of-form so far. He found it against the Giants today.
Anyway here's info on the Mexico City games:
Saturday’s game is slated for a 6:05 p.m. ET/3:05 p.m. PT start, followed by a 4:05 p.m. ET/1:05 p.m. PT start on Sunday. NBC Sports Bay Area and Bally Sports will provide coverage for the Giants and Padres, respectively. MLB Network will broadcast both games to out-of-market locations. ESPN Mexico and Star+ will serve as the local broadcasters for both games.
shows how one call can change a game. Before the home run, Webb had the guy struck out, with a pitch that was not even borderline. Called a ball. He seemed to not recover from that call. It reminds me of a game years ago that the giants were beating Atlanta, and on a 2-2 pitch, Livan tossed a fastball strike right down the middle catching Galarrhaga by surprise. It obviously caught the ump by surprise too. Almost like the pitch Romo used to end the world series against Miguel Cabrera. But Livan's pitch was called a ball. Instead of 3 outs, and the giants going back to the dugout with their lead, on the next pitch Galarrhaga crushed it and gave Atlanta the lead. Not sure if it is the upset or whatever, that a later pitch after a key call may just not quite have the usual movement, especially as the game goes on. Also again a bit of the team once again falling a bit apart after a bad throw by Crawford, which was not an error but instead of an inning ending Dp, Arenado was safe at first, and 3 more runs came in after 2 outs. The team has to hit. I did not think that it was particularly fair to Webb, having Beck come in to clean up, as the game was still close, and he is still a work in progress. Instead of a close game, it became a 6 to zip game. Although the Marlin's game back with a big 9th to beat the braves today, the giants looked flat as could be on offense. Would have been a great day for the giants to creep close to the teams above them. The worse the pitcher has done coming in to face the giants, the better he seems to pitch against the giants. Anyone know when Wood is coming back?
They put Wood on the 15-day IL on the 20th. But I suspect he will not be ready by then as they said "several weeks."
Darn, these athletes are so fragile.
