Braves wear out Webb

ATL 5  SF 1

Atlanta phenom Spencer Strider dominated the Giants lineup--though that isn't hard to do--for seven frames, allowing only three hits and one run against nine whiffs. Two of the three hits were singles by rookies Wade Meckler and Luis Matos. Joc Pederson led off the 7th with a triple and scored on a ground ball out from J.D. Davis. Meanwhile Logan Webb was tormented by Michael Harris II (another Atlanta phenom) who homered in the 1st, and then singled, stole second, and scored in his next two at-bats. Webb lasted 5-1/3 and threw 92 pitches. Alex Wood relieved and finished up the final 3-2/3 with only one hit allowed.

This afternoon's game is at 1:05. Ryan Walker gets the start.

Go Giants!

Giants used six rookies today. Walker opened the game. Bailey, Schmitt, Ramos, and Matos started and played all nine. Meckler subbed. All the rookie hitters had at least one hit (half the team's total).

Every Giants pitcher used today gave up at least one run. Walker's line (1-2/3, 1 R, 3 K) isn't the worst one of the day. Besides Wilmer's HR only Meckler had an RBI.

Wilmer is awesome.

This is not a good team right now, obviously. But the rookies are getting the experience they need for next year and beyond, so there's that.

David Laurila at FanGraphs talks to under-the-radar Giants pitching prospect John Michael Bertrand. He's a 2022 10th round pick from Notre Dame, originally from Georgia. His dad and uncle grew up in Ireland and played rugby. He was cut from two college teams before finding his groove. 99-1/3 IP over three levels (A-, A+, AA) this year, 10-5, 3.17 ERA. He'll start next year at AA-Richmond.
