Shohei Ohtani goes to the Los Angeles Dodgers where everyone expected him to go. The rumor about him signing in Toronto was very convincing, and it seemed like a bold move for him, but he took the safe path. (I-5 in this case.) It's a monster deal: $700 million for 10 years.
It figures. The Dodgers have the capital to blow away the competition, and that they did. The projections all said it would take a ten-year deal but they also settled on $500M. That narrowed the field to a handful of teams but LA would have none of it and simply went "all-in" to chase them away. It was Godzilla vs. a Bunch of Bambis at that point.
I was not expecting the Giants to sign Ohtani. The only thing I wanted for Christmas was that he wouldn't sign with LA. I should have expected the Dodgers to get their man all along, but I suppose I had blocked it out in hope of a better outcome.
Time for the Giants to start signing some new players, don't you think?

Ohtani's contract is mostly deferred money, it seems. This will ease the cash-flow and luxury tax "burdens" and maintain some payroll flexibility.
It's a good move for him. He gets income far into the future, like Bobby Bonilla. It's good for the team as well as they will spend "inflated" dollars down the road. That costs them less than paying upfront.
Check out Baseball Musings (https://www.baseballmusings.com/?p=150871).
The Giants have signed Daulton Jefferies, pitcher, and Yoshi Tsutsugo, first baseman, to minor league contracts. I don't think that's what you meant, though.
No, it wasn't!
But these guys are actually important. You have to have minor league depth which means major league-level players for the youngsters to compete against. Then they get to see how much better they have to be to make it. Plus if you get a string of injuries it is nice to have a guy with actual big-league experience to take some reps and cover a temporary hole in the roster.
That being said, let's get on with the off-season already and sign some new guys!
Giants supposedly talked to Yoshinobu Yamamoto. This is from MLBTR.
