Webb leads Giants

SF 4  LA 1

Logan Webb has not had an easy time against the Dodgers. Other than his memorable performances in the 2021 playoffs (2 GS, 14-2/3 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 W, 17 K) his career line coming into tonight's start was a modest 3-6 in 13 starts with a 4.41 ERA (67-2/3 IP, 70 H, 38 R, 20 W, 56 K). Webb labored in the 1st, throwing 30 pitches while wriggling out of a bases-loaded jam. He added another 23 in the 2nd but settled down after that, needing only 50 pitches to throw another four scoreless. He finished with just three hits allowed (all singles) in his six innings but added an uncharacteristic three walks (with five strikeouts). Sean Hjelle and Erik Miller combined for another zero in the 7th and Tyler Rogers gave up a run in 8th. Camilo Doval put two on in the 9th but closed it out for a tidy win.

Mike Yastrzemski hit a two-run homer in the 3rd, driving in the just-acquired Curt Casali. Luis Matos made a great play in center field in the 4th to save a home run and he also added a two-out RBI hit in the 8th. Heliot Ramos also had a two-out RBI hit, this one in the 6th, as the Giants added on late to secure their first win against the Dodgers this season. It's an off-day tomorrow and then the Rockies come to town for three on the weekend.

Go Giants!

The outfielders did most of the hitting. Casali almost caught another one of his famous shutouts. Soler went 0 for 4 with a K in his rehab start. Several outfielders the giants gave up on are having dece t seasons. Or at least some play the outfield some of the time. Connor Joe, Tauchman, Pillar, Pederson, wont consider Reynolds as we traded him as a prospect. Is there something wrong with giants coaching? Or, is it small sa.ple size error?

Tauchman went to Korea to re-invent himself. He hit well below ML average before then. He hit .178 as a Giants outfielder! He's 33 now.

Pillar made $5.8M as a Giants player and was let go because he would have likely gotten an arb-increase. He's been released by five teams since then! He's a good player but strictly a part-timer, and he's 35.

Pederson is Pederson. We know what he can do. He should DH full-time. You don't want him in the OF. He still has a big bat, esp. against lefties. D-Backs gave him a better deal than SF offered.

Giants fans were all over FZ for putting Connor Joe in the Opening Day lineup. He was seen as a roster-churn experiment, not a former 1st-rounder. He's the one that should not have gotten away. Joe is a solid player but it took a trade (from COL to PIT) for him to really show his stuff.

Reynolds was traded in 2018. Pirates have him locked up on an 8-year, $100M deal. He's not going anywhere. It's too bad we lost him, but that's water under the bridge at this point.

I think 2024 is a case of bad luck. Soler and Lee were good signings, on paper, they just haven't worked out. Conforto is finally healthy and playing closer to his expected performance. Yaz is getting closer. He's got a year of arb left. Slater has bottomed out. He's a free agent next year.

I guess we'll have to hope Ramos and Matos can provide what the club needs. I don't see them getting any help from anywhere else in the league.

I meant "righties" with Pederson. He doesn't usually play against same-hand pitching.

Giants just added another OF:

Jerar Encarnación

He was an amateur FA from the DR and has been in Miami's system since he was 18 (26 now). He had a brief stint with the Marlins in 2022.

Hi latest professional gig? The Oaxaca Guerreros of the Mexican League!

Labrum surgery for Jung Hoo Lee.

That ends his season.
