The Giants couldn't get much going with the bat today and lost to the Tigers 3-1. This was the team's 54th game which is one-third of the season. At 31-23 they find themselves in second place behind LA despite playing .500 ball since their hot start.
The Giants have scored 238 runs (4.4 rpg) which is a tick above the league average (229, 4.3 rpg). The team's slash line of .232/.310/.380 is actually lower than the ML average of .244/.316/.395! This team has benefited from a lot of clutch hits.
On the pitching side they've allowed 196 runs (3.6 rpg) which is quite good. They are fourth-best in ERA (3.25) and third-best in FIP (3.39). Thank the bullpen for that!
If they can stabilize the rotation and get some consistency behind the top two spots that would be a huge improvement for the rest of the year. But they will still struggle to score runs. That makes it hard to play over .500 for long stretches. Regardless, it's Memorial Day and the Giants would be a playoff team if the season ended today.
3:40 start tomorrow and it should be Webb's turn.
Go Giants!

When is this team going to start hitting. They are not facing top notch Detroit pitchers, and they are not hitting at all. Now Webb has lost 2 straight to back of the rotation type starters. One thing different about Melvin vs. Kapler, Melvin sits a bunch of his guys for quite a few games, then when they come in they seem stale. Not always, but when Kapler managed, a lot of his players were on their toes, and when replacements came in, it often seemed as if there was a decent chance that something good might happen. Also, we really need, Adames, Chapman, Bailey, and Wade to figure out how to hit. Maybe Flores should be the hitting coach.
I wish I knew.
The Giants got lots of hits today but still had trouble scoring.
The Tigers are a good team.
Travel day tomorrow, Miami (21-32, last place) is next.
I did not like pinch-hitting for Huff with Bailey. Good lord, Huff had a hit and a walk! In the end the Giants could not get the big hit when they had to have it and the Tigers did.
I have been in Japan for 3 weeks. The number of people I observed was quite literally in the millions. Among American baseball team hats, I saw one other guy with a San Francisco hat, he was an old, white, tourist. I saw one Angels hat, three Boston hats (I think one was on an Asian guy from Boston), and one Detroit hat (on a guy also wearing a Los Angeles Dodgers t-shirt). There were lots and lots of New York Yankees hats and LA hats. I think that, at this point, the Yankees hats are more of a fashion statement than a baseball team allegiance sort of thing, like an I [heart] NY shirt. They come in every color combination imaginable. Or to show that someone has visited there. But, (sigh) the LA hats. Everywhere, as is Ohtani selling everything. I took to calling him Ubiquitani. Only a few in anything other than blue and white colors. It's sad, but I guess I can't blame the Japanese. After all, LA has a good portion of the country's World Baseball Cup winning team.
I hope Encarnacion can get back and provide some offense soon.
It's pretty hard to compete with the biggest city with the biggest market! The real bummer is that LA is a competently-run organization. They are good at what they do. They aren't clueless rich kids bumbling around with Daddy's new toy and fucking it up. They aren't run by Elon Musk. They've got the smartest people in the game. They use their financial muscle and global brand to stay on top.
One of the things I hate about European soccer leagues is that the same teams win every year. Take a look at the English Premier League. Since 1992, 33 seasons, FIVE teams have won almost all the titles (Man Utd 13, Man City 8, Chelsea 5, Arsenal 3, Liverpool 2). And if you look at the tables those same five teams dominate 2nd and 3rd place finishes as well. What are fans of the other teams supposed to care about? They KNOW their team will never win the Premier League!
The Dodgers are turning the NL West into the fucking Premier League. What are the rest of the fans supposed to do?
