6th inning: 8-10

1st inning: 7-11
2nd inning: 12-6
3rd inning: 6-12
4th inning: 10-8
5th inning: 11-7
6th inning: 8-10

The Giants claw their way back to .500 (54-54) with a 5-3 win over the Padres. It only took twelve innings but a win is a win. A three-run homer from Chase d'Arnaud gave them an early lead but they couldn't hold it. They survived a scare in the 11th but then Gorkys Hernandez hit his 13th homer in the 12th and they scratched out another run to give Will Smith a cushion to close it. He struck out the side imperiously and the Giants had a big win.

After 108 games the Giants have three winning innings and three losing innings. Does that surprise you? We are all waiting for this team to "make a move" and put together a stretch of consistent winning baseball. When they score four or more runs and/or allow three or fewer runs they are a hell of a club. Can they do that for their final 54 games? They'll have to do it without Johnny Cueto who appears headed for Tommy John surgery. Despite the looming trade deadline the Giants have yet to make a move. Maybe they really mean it when they say they just have to get the guys they already have to play better! We'll see. Rookie Dereck Rodriguez gets the start tomorrow at 1:05 Pacific.

GO GIANTS!

MLBTR reports some trade interest in Andrew McCutchen but finishes the column with this:

For the Giants, there’d be some financial incentive in moving McCutchen, as shedding the remainder of his salary (roughly $4.84MM) would help to ensure that they remain south of the $197MM luxury tax threshold. But, doing so would also thin their outfield mix and serve as a gut-punch in the clubhouse. Ultimately, it doesn’t seem likely that the Giants will opt to deal McCutchen prior to the non-waiver deadline, though the interest in him and the potential for a move down the line are of at least some note.

That sort of how I see it. But you never know, teams are really scrambling for help at this point so anything can happen. I expect I'll be checking MLBTR a lot today!!

The Mariners just acquired Cameron Maybin. While not as accomplished a player as Cutch, he's the same age, much cheaper, and still plays CF. For two months he can give you a close approximation, maybe with a little more speed and glove. The Indians needed an OF too and picked up Leonys Martin, again same age as Cutch, not as accomplished, but even cheaper and like Maybin still plays CF.

I'll be shocked if the Giants find a buyer for Cutch, assuming they are selling (which I don't think they are).

Looks like we'll have to wait for any action by the Brain Trust. Trade deadline has been passed.

Now any trade will involve the players clearing waivers (unless they are not on a 40-man roster).
