Two in a row!

SF 8  BAL 1
Jeff Samardzija produced an outstanding effort after a worrisome start. He allowed a solo shot in--you guessed it--the 1st inning but put up five zeroes after that. Three hits, no walks, and six strikeouts for the Shark who threw 110 pitches to 21 batters in his six frames. The Giants scored in the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th to dominate in Baltimore and make it two wins out of three over the hapless Orioles. Evan Longoria (three hits including a homer) and Brandon Crawford (two homers) delivered the thump. Reyes Moronta, Tony Watson (who struck out the side), and Will Smith finished up.

Travel day tomorrow then it is three against the Mets in New York. Madison Bumgarner against Noah Syndergaard on Tuesday, with Tyler Beede and Shaun Anderson on Wednesday and Thursday.

GO GIANTS!

2 fine starts in a row and 3 of the last 4 - matching, not surprisingly, the games the Giants have won.

Yeah, let's see some more of that!

Giants hit three homers--that's pretty unusual for the Giants, but not the rest of baseball. Here's David Pinto from Baseball Musings:

The month of May 2019 finished with 1135 home runs, blowing away the previous record of 1069 home runs in May of 2000. More importantly, May 2019 produced the highest rate of home runs per plate appearance in the low mound ERA (1969 on), with 3.58% of plate appearances ending in home runs. May 2000 was also second at 3.37%.

The worst May in this ERA was in 1976, when home runs were hit in just 1.65% of PA.

For the current year, batters are hitting home runs in 3.51% of PA, also the highest in the low mound ERA. April and May both set records, and we’ll know in a few hours how June starts.

Don't want to be pessimistic but it should have been a giants sweep.

Yes, it should have been. That's not pessimism, that's the truth!

And, how does a trip from Baltimore to New York rate a 'travel day' (unless they're riding their bikes, I guess), while a trip from New York to San Francisco does not? Was there some problem playing the Mets' Series on Monday through Wednesday? I get that the Mets were going from AZ to NY, but it was for a Night Game after a Day Game.

Yeah I don't get that either. I know the Giants lobbied hard for 'getaway day' early start times, but how and when they figure travel days is confusing. Teams like the Giants and the Mariners (and obviously all the West Coast teams) have a big travel penalty compared to, say, the AL East. Not sure that can be dealt with meaningfully, unless of course Elon Musk's Boring Company builds inter-stadia Hyperloops across the country. Come to think of it, MLB might be an outfit with enough 'stupid money' to pull that off!

Oh, and I believe the Giants took a train to NYC on this trip rather than fly.

Should be a great matchup tomorrow: MadBum v. Thor.
