Epic win stops streak

SF 13  NYM 12

The Giants got pasted 13-3 in the series opener on Monday night but came out swinging last night and took an 8-2 lead against Chris Bassitt after five. The highlights were homers: a three-run shot from Tommy LaStella and two two-run bombs from Joc Pederson. Logan Webb was effective but had to throw too many pitches against the pesky Mets lineup and the bullpen took over for the final four frames. Jarlin Garcia pitched a scoreless 6th but Dominic Leone gave up a two-run homer in the 7th to make it 8-4. It seemed like the Giants would be OK but Tyler Rogers had his worst inning ever in the 8th, giving up seven hits and seven runs on 25 pitches. Camilo Doval had to come in for the last two outs (and he gave up two hits!).

The stunned Giants went to the bottom half down 11-8 and quickly made two outs but they put two on for Joc Pederson and he delivered. His massive homer tied the game and made history. He's only the third player to hit three at the SF ballpark and the first to hit three multi-run homers. Joc said after the game that his long conversation with Barry Bonds earlier in the day was the key to his performance.

John Brebbia came out for the 9th and sure enough the Mets took a 12-11 lead and the Giants faced another potential loss. With only three outs remaining Wilmer Flores singled but was erased by a La Stella double play ball. A walk to Yaz kept it alive and a single by Darin Ruf moved him to second. Joc Pederson singled for his 8th RBI and tied the game. Brandon Crawford followed with a single to score Ruf and the Giants had their best win of the year.

It has been an ugly May for the orange-and-black. The team is 9-12 and they've allowed 135 runs. Last night's win snapped a five-game losing streak. The Mets and Padres are good teams but the Giants can do better. Let's hope the epic victory last night is a harbinger of change.

Jakob Junis this afternoon (12:45 Pacific).

Go Giants!

Giants LHP prospect Kyle Harrison got promoted to AA. I took this tidbit from Alex Pavlovic at NBC Sports Bay Area:

Harrison made seven starts in High-A, posting a 1.55 ERA and striking out 59 of the 118 batters he faced. In 29 innings, Harrison allowed just 19 hits and walked 10.

He turns 21 in August. Maybe a 2023 debut for the former De La Salle star?

FanGraphs calls it The Game of the Year.

Can you spell EPIC! That was an incredible game. High HIGHS and LOW lows. The Giants are driving me to drink! All I can say is WOW. I just re-watched the eighth and ninth for the fourth time. Never get tired of an amazing Giants comeback. Now let's hope the momentum continues. GO GIANTS!

I'm sorry, that was an awful game. Shitty defense, horrendous relief pitching (which was supposed to be among our strengths). At least Logan Webb pitched well, although he used a lot of pitches for 5 innings. The Giants were up 8 - 2 and coughed that up, almost all at once. I was shocked to look at the box score and see no errors for either team. I would have thought the Giants to have had about 6 and the Mets at least another 3. Balls unable to be pulled out of gloves, no one at a base to throw to. I can't count how may times the announcers were, like "and they get NOBODY out." Dink that should have been an out after dink that should have been an out. Awful. Relying on Joc Pederson to hit 3 home runs a game is hardly a blueprint for success. The Giants defense has been sloppy lately in general, and their offense generally anemic (until last night). It's not a good sign that the Giants needed 13 fucking runs to win. It's good the Giants won, though. I was left less with a sense of highs and lows ending in a high than relief that it ended without going into extras and having the Giants blow it yet again.

They're up 6 - 0 with hr by Joc, Longo, and Yaz as I type this, so maybe there is some momentum.

Hey Mr Grumpy-pants, the Giants have played poorly, no question. But that was an absolutely EPIC win!! Both things can true. Ya gotta celebrate those amazing comebacks (their closer Diaz is a beast and they beat him!) and the amazing performance by Joc. Loved the resilience of the team.

It's how a team deals with losing and setbacks that shows their true nature. Today's win was big. That's back-to-back wins against a very strong club to snap a losing streak, what's not to like?

I much preferred today's victory, thank you.

The team blew wins for webb in 2 consecutive potential wins when he exited the game. The 13-12 game was a roller coaster of an entertaining game. It happened on my birthday and was an apt metaphor for my life. But, perhaps most importantly it may have broken the curse or the pox put upon the giants when management decided to depart with Dubon for nothing more than a little league hitting catcher.

Dubon could have been DFAd but they made an effort to find a spot on an active roster for him. Hence the trade. Supposedly they liked Papierski and he was on their radar already, although I suspect they really wanted him for AAA depth and not necessarily for the MLB roster. Catchers are worth a lot!! Casali got hurt so they had to call him up.

Dubon had 522 PAs for the Giants. He got a fair look. He got every chance to be more than just the 26th man. The Giants got caught in a roster squeeze because Thairo Estrada emerged as a better option.

We all liked Dubon and rooted for him, it's a bummer things didn't work out.
