Shutout snaps skid

SF 2  HOU 0

Anthony DeSclafani pitched his best game of the season so far, stifling the Astros for eight innings on only three hits. Camilo Doval got the save in the 9th. Doval struggled with the pitch clock but managed to get the job done. Joey Bart helped him out with a mound visit before the final strikeout. The Giants offense blew a lot of chances (Houston's pitchers walked nine batters!) but they managed to plate a couple of runs and that turned out to be enough. I remember thinking about half way through the game that it would take a shutout to win, and that's just what happened. TonyD really stepped up and delivered a superb performance when the Giants desperately needed a stopper.

Yesterday the Giants finally got a better outcome from Ross Stripling (5 IP, 2 R, 0 W, 5 K) but lost anyway when the bullpen couldn't hold the lead. Sean Hjelle was the victim and he was sent down. Cole Waites gets the spot. Cal Stevenson and Brett Wisely replace IL-bound Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Crawford.

The getaway game is tomorrow morning (11:10 PT) with Logan Webb matching up against Framber Valdez. Valdez leads baseball with a 64.3% ground ball percentage*. Alex Cobb is just behind him at 60.8%, and Webb is fifth-best with 59.6%.

Go Giants!

He is now number 6 in ERA, not that it matters so much to the baseball stat elites. But with the one play at first in a recent outing, that was called a hit, but what probably an error, and would have been the third out, he ended up giving up 2 runs which were earned. And, unfortunately for him, when it comes to Goldschmidt he is a batting practice pitcher. Hopefully, he will not have to pitch vs. the dodgers, because when he had a great year in 2021, he was nothing more than batting practive to a bunch of Dodger hitters. He could not get them out on multiple occasions. We seem to be one good starter short, and with Wood on the I.L., 2 good starters short. So far the rotation of Cobb, Webb, and Desclafani are formidable. Much like the giants of the 60's, they always seemed one good starter short. But today there is free agency, and we are still one or two good starters short. Perhaps help from the minors by midseason, but our number one prospect cannot seem to consistently throw strikes. In the future let the hitters go to Mexico City, but keep the pitchers at home.

https://www.facebook.com/thebsblr/videos/298389978403823 Cut and paste this in your browser. Remember this. Just one of the AB's that show some kind of proof that giants have, in the past, and still get terrible calls from the umpires.

TonyD has issued only 3 walks in 38 IP (144 TBF). Damn impressive! He's kept the homers down, too (only 4).

We definitely missed DeSclafani last year.
