Trevor McDonald took advantage of his call-up and pitched a gem. Seven innings with only two hits and one run allowed with no walks and eight whiffs is pretty damn good. TEN groundouts! The Giants backed him up--just enough--and got some relief--just enough--for their 14th win. McDonald was drafted right out of high school in the 11th round in 2019. He made his debut in 2024 and pitched in three games last season.
Neither of the other call-ups did anything although Jesús Rodriguez did start behind the plate and catch McDonald's effort before being replaced by Patrick Bailey. Bryce Eldridge got a walk as DH.
As Zo pointed out Will Brennan was optioned, Erik Miller sent to the IL and Jerar Encarnacion was DFAd. So the Giants added to the roster without a painful subtraction. Let's hope the FNGs can add a little winning spark.
Should be Logan Webb tonight (6:45 Pacific). Go Giants!

So far, what I have read about Vitello's comments, is that thus far he is not committed to putting McDonald in the rotation at this point, and says it will be a group think decision.
Yeah I saw that. I guess you have to give your veteran FA signings a chance to pitch themselves out of the rotation!
Apparently so. McDonald has been optioned back to Sacramento and Peguero has been recalled.
He'll be back. I suspect Webb will go to the IL or at least they'll need to sit him for a few starts.
Webb doesn't look injured, but he sure has not been that effective this year in several starts. This Winter I posted in several places that it would behoove Posey to go out and get an Ace as a priority, because I did not think that Webb was a true Ace. He is good, and an innings eater, but perhaps some of the league has caught up with him, and he has not adjusted back. If he were 4 and 2, instead of 2 and 4, perhaps the giants situation would not look as dire. Finally they hit a little for him, and he coughs it up. Maybe that is why they don't like to hit early in games behind him. Ok that last sentence wasn't serious, but it sometimes feels like that. Or should I say, you could feel the implosion coming. What are the odds that Tatis hits his first homer of the year today against our amazing pitching staff?
The Giants need reliable relief pitching. In their last 9 games, against Philly, Tampa Bay, and San Diego, they are 1 - 8. The relief staff has given up 12 runs in the 7th inning or later, the Giants have scored a total of 18. 10 of those 18 were in two games, both losses.
I wonder if Webb is being hurt by the ABS. He pitches on the edges of the zone and maybe guys are laying off, forcing him to come in. The strike zone is definitely smaller: walks are up across baseball.
