It is my good fortune to post something when Madison Bumgarner pitches. He gets wins and that makes me post in a much better mood than when the Giants lose. You, in turn, benefit by being spared my vitriol. At least some of it.
Madison Bumgarner pitched for the Giants tonight and the Giants beat the Cardinals by a score of 9 - 8 in a wild game. 40 different players made appearances in this game. The Giants went up 4 - 0, then the Cardinals caught up, then the Giants went up 7 - 4, then the Cardinals went up 8 - 7, and finally Kevin Pillar hit his 21st home run of the year with Brandon Crawford on base for the GWRBI in the 8th inning.
The Cardinals have been playing excellent ball, they had won 20 of their last 25 games. OMG if only the Giants could put together a run like that. Last night, if you recall, Derek Rodriguez pitched superbly but came away with the loss and the Giants gave up 1 solo home run but were held scoreless by Jack Flaherty. They said that August was the best month of pitching for a Cardinal since Bob Gibson, one of my childhood heroes. Madison was not nearly so good, nor anywhere near as good as he can be. He gave up 9 hits in 5 innings, walked 1 and struck out only 2. 1 of those hits was a home run and he gave up 6 total. The Giants were charged with 1 error, on a Corban Joseph bobbled grounder, but there were a couple of other near misses that led to runs. Jaylin Davis had one clang off his glove at the wall and Mike Yastrzemski missed one at the fence in left. Both of those would have been spectacular catches, but on another night, that might have prevented Cardinal runs from scoring. The Cardinals also erred once, on a bizarre 3rd-out ground ball in the 6th. DeJong at shortstop picked up the ball, started to throw to 1st to retire Longoria and then choked and tossed the ball to Wong at 2nd, who was totally surprised and off the bag when he snagged it to allow Posey to reach base. That put 2 men on for Brandon Crawford who homered for 3 runs to make the score 7 - 4. Yaz also homered, a solo shot in the 3rd. Kevin Pillar has had 8 4-hit games in his 6-year career, 4 of them have been as a Giant. The Giants used 6 pitchers, the Cardinals 7. So that's Bochy win # 1993. 1 win out of their last 5, 2 out of their last 9, 4 of their last 14. Please, please, please don't go into the final weekend needing a sweep against LA to give him 2000.

Double-digits
SF 11 AZ 6
For the second straight night in Arizona the Giants rapped out double-digit hits (18) and double-digit runs (11). They scored in five different innings. Brandon Belt got the rout started with a grand slam in the 2nd inning. He added RBIs in the 3rd and the 8th to finish with six. Kevin Pillar had five hits in five at-bats and scored three runs. Scooter Gennett also scored three runs. Austin Slater had a good night with two hits and some fine work in right field. It was another nutty offensive outburst by a team that has struggled to score runs for much of the season. That's three wins in a row over the D-Backs and five wins in the last six games. The Giants are now 8-8 in August and back to two games over .500 (63-61) with 38 games to play.
Rookie Logan Webb ran into trouble in the 1st inning but then settled down and delivered four scoreless after that. He induced double-play grounders to end both the 4th and the 5th. The youngster threw 94 pitches to 21 batters, whiffing seven and walking one, allowing only two runs on five hits. He kept the ball in the yard, something that neither Andrew Suarez nor Travis Bergen could pull off in their relief stints. That can be tough to do in a homer-happy ballpark in a homer-happy season. Jandel Gustave got the final four outs. The game ended most unusually when Eduardo Escobar tried to stretch his two-out, bases-empty 9th-inning double into a triple and was gunned down at third base (Slater to Gennett to Solano). That's crazy, man.

Yaz Hammers Three

The Giants and Diamondbacks combined for TWELVE home runs in an extra-inning slugfest that featured 28 hits and 19 runs scored. Mike Yastrzemski outdid everyone with a sensational three-homer display that included the eventual game-winner in the 11th inning. The not-so-young rookie has "served notice" that he's a power threat to be reckoned with. Currently he sports a .548 slugging percentage, the highest on the team by far, and one of only two Giants above .500 in that metric. The league slugs .437 overall, and the team .404, the fourth-worst in baseball.
Two spectacular bullpen meltdowns were featured, with Tony Watson and Sam Coonrod blowing a five-run lead in the 8th, and Will Smith blowing a two-run lead in the 10th, but the Giants kept fighting back and eventually prevailed. The D-Backs hit six homers, one in the 1st, three in the 8th, and two in the 10th. Brandon Belt hit the first of the Giants six bombs in the 3rd, then Yaz added his first, Kevin Pillar hit one in the 4th, Yaz did it again in the 7th, Pillar again in the 10th, and then Yaz finished things in the 11th with his third. It was a wild night in Arizona.
The Giants are now 7-8 in August and 62-61 overall, a game ahead of the D-Backs for second place in the NL West. 22-year old righthander Logan Webb will make his debut tonight at 5:10 Pacific. Webb is from Rocklin, CA and was signed with the team right out of high school. He has 60 starts in the minors, mostly at A and AA level. In his one start with the AAA River Cats he threw seven scoreless. Webb had to serve an 80-game suspension earlier this year because of a positive PED test. MLB Pipeline rates Webb as the team's number-five prospect.

Wild, wild life
SF 8 COL 4 (10)
The Giants continue to play utterly relentless baseball. They took a 2-0 lead in the 1st and stretched it to a 4-1 lead in the 9th. Then Mr. Automatic, Will Smith, gave up two homers in the bottom of the 9th and the Rockies tied the game and sent it to extras. Oh, no problem. The Giants ripped out another four runs and took an 8-4 lead into the bottom of the 10th. Mark Melancon then finished it off.
It's a wild, wild life.
Mike Yastrzemski and Alex Dickerson went 7-for-10 with four runs scored and five runs batted in. Kevin Pillar continues to make superb plays in the field to rob hits and save runs. I don't care if his OBP is under .300, man. That's 11 wins in the last 13 games.
Shaun Anderson goes tomorrow at 12:10 Pacific.

Just enough!

The Cardinals promising young righty Jack Flaherty dazzled the Giants for six no-hit innings in San Francisco this afternoon, dominating what had been a hot-hitting club. Fortunately Jeff Samardzija matched him with six zeroes himself, and Kevin Pillar bailed out The Shark in the 7th with two big catches to keep the shutout intact. In the bottom half Evan Longoria launched a no-doubter and the Giants had a 1-0 lead in the final game before the All-Star Break. Sam Dyson whiffed three in the 8th and Will Smith made it 23-for-23 with only seven pitches in the 9th and the win was in the books. That's six victories in their last seven games, and a 5-1 record for July. Game 90 (end of the 5th seasonal inning) is the first game back, Friday night in Milwaukee.
Seems fitting that we get a soccer score today as the USWNT completed their World Cup quest with a convincing shutout win in France over The Netherlands. Good show, ladies!
The Giants are playing better quality, more entertaining baseball. Let's hope they keep it up when they come back.

June 30, 2019: Madbum Still Not Traded Yet
In spite of the fact that each day since my last post I have heard some allusion to him being traded, I am increasingly convinced that the Giants strongest assets lie in their relief pitching. Will Smith (21 for 21 saves) is going to be an All-Star. The record for consecutive saves is held by Rod Beck, with 24.
The Giants discovered some offense today, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks for a 4-game split by a score of 10 - 4. That was after a disappointing effort against Greinke last night, in which the Giants held the snakes scoreless behind Pomeranz for 5 and Moronta for 1 before Kevin Pillar dropped a fly ball in center field and to allow a run with Sam Dyson on the mound. Greinke made quick work of the Giants in the 7th, in spite of hitting Vogt with a pitch and in the 8th, Crawford erred his way (his 10th) into allowing a run behind Melancon (who "earned" 2 himself). The Giants scored 3 in the 9th, which would have been enough to win it if not for the poor fielding. Crawford currently has the worst fielding percentage in his career.
Today was different. The Giants looked sharp on offense, especially Kevin Pillar (a home run, 4 for 5 and 5 rbi's) and Buster Posey (3 for 3 and a BB). Buster also hit the ball well Friday (3 for 4). Longoria, Yastrzemski, Panik and Sandoval also had rbi's. Madison Bumgarner threw 7 innings and used 96 pitches to do so. He walked no one and allowed 1 run on 4 hits. He struck out 9. That ties him with Tim Lincecum for 4th place on the all time Giants' strikeout list. Take a look. Christy Mathewson, Juan Marichal, Amos Rusie, then Madbum and Tim, then Matt Cain. That should tell you all you need to know about how the Giants won 3 world series titles in a 5 year stretch.
Yet, with the win Friday night, they took 2 of the 4. That makes the Giants record 14 - 13 for June, and 9 - 10 against the western division since we started this stretch against them June 7 in LA. We play 3 in San Diego starting tomorrow and then 4 (including a double-header) in Denver on July 15 - 17. At this point last year, the Giants were 43 - 40. So, to use the whole season, as Mark has done, to project a 70 - 92 season is not the only way to figure out what the Giants are "on a pace" to accomplish. One could also say, based on recent performance, that the Giants are "on a pace" to go 77 - 85. That would be an improvement over last year's 73 win season (remember, the Giants lost A LOT at the end of the year). We're supposed to be improving this year, right? Don't trade Madbum!

That's Three
The San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies played 18 innings of baseball last night. In that game, the Giants used every available reliever (and even Derek Rodriguez got used as a pinch hitter). So the one thing the Giants wanted was to have today's afternoon starter give them a good outing. Who better than Madison Bumgarner, 50% stubborn ox anyway?
Madison did what he was asked, and did it well. 98 pitches got him through 7 innings. He gave up 1 run in the 6th and 1 in the 7th after the Giants already had 3 on the board. He gave up 6 hits, struck out 7 and walked no one. Although the Giants used every reliever last night, an number were only used for 1 inning; Moronta, Dyson, Watson, and Smith. Madison came out to pitch the 7th, but the first batter, Chris Ianetta, landed on second base with what probably should have been cut off to hold him to a single. Reyes Moronta was brought in, and did a fine job of striking out the next three batters. Sam Dyson made it an uneventful 9th for the Giants third win in a row, and third over Colorado. Given the way Colorado chewed up and spit out the Giants last year, I am surprised. They, like the Giants, have had a lot of trouble putting runs on the board this year. For example, Nolan Arenado has yet to hit a home run. I expect that to change, but you need to jump on teams when they are down and the Giants haven't done nearly enough of that in the last couple years.
And speaking of runs, the Giants, after doing just enough the last couple nights, added on in the bottom of the 8th (sac flies from and Parra and Duggar) to make the final score Rockies 2, Giants 5. Buster Posey picked up his first rbi of the season with a 3rd inning double, and Pillar got the other 2 rbi with a sac fly in the 3rd and a solo home run in the 5th.
But really: pitching. The Giants have held the Rockies to 4 runs in 36 innings. The Giants are right up there with the best in the NL in pitching stats, along with Pittsburgh, and we'll see them on the road trip that starts after tomorrow's game. But first, tomorrow. Everyone's tired, but with a decent start out of Dutch, and with Watson and Smith having today off, anything (like a sweep) is possible.

Pillars of Strength

FNG-no-longer Kevin Pillar continued his heroics with a game-changing blast in the 7th inning. In a scoreless tie he hammered Jon Gray's first pitch of the frame over the left-centerfield wall to make it 1-0 for the home team. Add in a dominant start by Jeff Samardzija who fanned seven over seven allowing only three singles and one walk and the Giants prevailed. Excellent relief (Tony Watson in the 8th and Will Smith in the 9th) and slick fielding closed the door on the Rockies.
You could call a game like this "a scintillating pitchers duel" but there is nothing scintillating about the Giants offense. They did just enough, however, and I think we'll take it! Giants go to 5-9 and are now a game-and-a-half out of last place (Colorado is 3-10).
Let's keep the good times rolling. Drew Pomeranz tomorrow night at 7:15 Pacific.

Giants can't get it done

The Giants waste a strong start from Dereck Rodriguez who faced 27 batters in his seven innings of work. He allowed only four hits and one walk and struck out five (101 pitches). One of the hits was a solo homer by Manny Machado. The offense managed seven hits (by seven guys) but scored just one run on a solo shot by Kevin Pillar. Reyes Moronta pitched a scoreless 8th and Will Smith gave up a run in the 9th.
The Rockies come to town for four games starting tomorrow. Both teams have scored a paltry 38 runs, but the Giants have given up 47 compared to the Rockies 69. That minus-31 difference is the worst in MLB. They have lost five in a row and are one-half game behind the Giants for last place. Jon Gray is listed for Colorado but the home team starter is still TBD on the website. It's Jeff Samardzija's turn as he last pitched on Saturday.

For the second straight night FNG Kevin Pillar chipped in four RBIs, but this time it paid off in a big win. He gets the RMC FNG of the Week Award! He must have read the memo: How to Impress Your New Fanbase. But I'm burying the lede. The real hero tonight was southpaw starter Derek Holland who subdued a right-handed lineup for seven solid innings. Only two walks (and five hits) against NINE strikeouts and Dutch matches Bumgarner's opening day dominance but with some offensive support. Holland's only blemish was a solo shot from Hunter Renfroe with one out in the 7th and he responded with two strikeouts to end the inning. Trevor Gott gave up a run in the 8th and Mark Melancon closed out the 9th. A fine effort from the lads tonight.
D-Rod goes tomorrow afternoon, 12:45 PDT start time. Go Giants!

Salami Nolo Contendre
The fog rolled in about 3 pm today in my neighborhood, then got heavier and heavier until it was a drizzle. By game time, it had let up enough, but was hardly dry. The park looked the same, until the fog rolled back in again late in the game.
No matter, the ball seemed to jump from time to time. The Giants scored in the bottom of the 4th, Brandon Crawford singled home FNG Austin Tyler for 1 run, and then scored himself along with Brandon Belt, Yangervis Solarte and the batter, Kevin Pillar, on a grand slam home run. That will net you some fans at the new team. It was the first grand slam the Giants have hit in 2 years and 1 day. That, I think, is the result less of a paucity of home runs (although there's that, too) and more of a failure to put men on base - they haven't had many 3 run home runs or 2 run home runs either. After a good 4th inning, the Giants followed up with - nothing. A few chances wasted, but they were stuck on 5 and that was not good enough to win tonight. Padres 6, Giants 5.
Madison Bumgarner on the mound, and the Giants got him 5 runs to work with after he had held the Padres hitless through 4. Not runner-less, though, as he put Fernando Tatis Jr. on via a HBP. That was the guy who came back in the 5th and hit a 2 run shot. The kind of electric talent that we only wish we had. Madbum gave up a solo shot to Wil Myers on a pitch after he thought he had struck Myers out, but according the the little box on the screen, it was clearly a ball. Madbum pitched into the 7th, when he put Tatis Jr on again by the HBP. He scored on a ground out after Francisco Meija (another youngster) doubled and he went to 3rd. That made it Padres 4 and brought in Reyes Moronta. With Meija on, Moronta gave up a no-doubter to Franmil Reyes (23 years old, like Meija) for the 5th and 6th runs. For Madbum: 6 IP, 3 K, 4 hits, 1 BB, 5 runs and 2 HBP. Moronta got the loss.
I like the new 6:45 start time, but am curious as to what the Giants think they'll accomplish. If baseball has a "demographics" problem with its audience, an earlier start time is a move to attract seniors, like me. You know, the kind that take advantage of the 4 pm dinner specials. Punks, they're fine with being up late. Sparse crowd, tough weather, and no win tonight.
