Two straight

SF 6  COL 3

Six pitchers subdued the Rockies and the Giants banged out four doubles and a homer to take the second game in Colorado. Sean Hjelle had a much better outing than last time, pitching the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th innings and yielding two runs on six hits. He got six ground ball outs including a couple of well-timed double plays. John Brebbia opened and pitched a scoreless 1st and Tyler Rogers, looking more like himself these days, got five ground ball outs in his two scoreless frames. Thomas Szapucki relieved Hjelle and gave up a run in the 8th as the Rockies pushed for a comeback but Yunior Marte and Jarlín García combined to get the last three outs in the 9th. Coors Field has a way of turning leads into deficits in the blink of an eye so I was happy to see the relief corps bend without breaking.

Austin Slater and Thairo Estrada at the top of the lineup had three of the four doubles and David Villar cranked the homer. Joey Bart had a hit and a walk and scored three runs. The lineup, in a change, was 4-for-8 with RISP. Giants have nine wins against the Rockies (against five losses), that's the most against any team this season.

Logan Webb gets the start tonight at 5:40 PT.

Go Giants!

p.s. In an interesting bit of news Buster Posey joined the ownership group of the team. He's now listed as a Principal Partner of the San Francisco Baseball Associates LLC.

Apparently Posey (who likely has a very small investment relative to the other partners) will sit on the Board of Directors. Currently there are five and he will make the sixth person.

The Board of Directors is not The Front Office. FZ and Crew will still be those guys doing those things. Here's some quotes (from MLBTR via NYT article):

When discussing the addition of Posey to the ownership team, Greg Johnson, the Giants’ chairman, told Kepner that the two of them want to bridge “the trust gap that exists because of the structure in baseball,” and that Posey is “somebody there that’s respected by the players and part of our ownership group.”

Posey reiterated this idea saying, “I want to be viewed as, like, pro-baseball … I’m not pro-player, I’m not pro-owner, I just love the game of baseball, and this is another opportunity for me to learn more about the game, more about the business and really commit my time to an organization in a city that I’ve grown to love.” Posey, however, clarified that he’s not “taking on any type of front office role” and that he’s going to take a more “hey, let me know where I can help and I’ll help there” approach with his new position.

Very Posey-esque. He's always had the diplomat's touch.

I would rather Posey still play than sit on a board of owners. Bart had a triple taken away, there was a play that Brinson thought he had made but did not hold onto the ball. That was not an error, and the hitter got his double. A little inconsistent. Perhaps Brinson's play was harder, but the play on Bart was not as easy as it appeared to the score keeper. Will take the giants win. So many bullpen games. With all the deals that Farhan pulls off, it is a wonder how he could not come up with another decent starter to take the heat off of the giants pen. The lack of a fifth starter has been part of the key to the giants demise, but that along with a stretch of poor hitting and fielding, and the giants dropped to over 30 games behind and most likely will win about 30 games less than last season.

Giants have better starting pitching than most teams. Five guys have given them 127 starts! Maybe a half a dozen other clubs can show more IP from their rotations than the Giants. This year's bullpen woes can't be blamed on that.
