10 for 30

SF 10  COL 4

The Giants rapped out a team-record eight doubles and also drew eleven walks to thump the Rockies and win their 30th game. It was a bullpen effort with rookie Ryan Walker getting the "W" and Sean Manaea doing the bulk-innings role. The full lineup was on display as both Thairo Estrada and Joc Pederson were back from the IL and Michael Conforto had his first start since last week. LaMonte Wade, Jr. continues to shine in the leadoff spot. He had three hits, three walks, three runs scored, and two RBI. His .429 OBP is second only to Miami's Luis Arraez who is currently batting .401! Wade's 41 walks put him 6th in MLB (Juan Soto is #1 with 56).

Logan Webb starts tonight (5:40 PT).

Go Giants!

One can take a lot of positives from that game, but the giants sure do strike out a lot. Early in the game both Conforto and Yaz were called out on full counts on pitches that were not in the strike zone. One could imagine the giants scoring 15 runs in that game. Also guys striking out with runners in scoring position and less than 2 outs continues to be a problem. Perhaps not in the limited scheme of yesterday's game, but in the grand scheme of the entire season. Now for a change I hope our ace can beat one of their not ace type starters.

The Giants strike out a lot. They have 599, second-most behind the Twins (625). League average is 524. The best team at avoiding whiffs is the Nats with 419. The two best teams by W-L record are the Rays (531) and Rangers (521) and you can see they are pretty much in the middle of the pack. The D-Backs (463) don't strike out a lot. The Dodgers (537) not far from the Rays and Rangers.

It would certainly help the Giants to cut down on strikeouts. Baseball-Reference has all the situational splits for the team and they mostly look positive or league-average. They don't appear to be particularly clutch or un-clutch except with the bases loaded where they have a lousy .192 BA (10-for-52) with 25 whiffs.

FanGraphs says the Giants have a 26.1 K% (that's K/PA), just behind the Twins (26.9). Like I said that's a lot of strikeouts!
