Webb, Giants edge Cards

SF 4  STL 3

The Giants took an early 2-0 lead but a solo shot by Paul DeJong in the 5th and a two-run homer by Paul Goldschmidt in the 6th made it 3-2 Cardinals. Mitch Haniger's two-out hit in the top of the 7th tied it up and Logan Webb recovered with a scoreless bottom half. The Giants rallied in the 8th when Patrick Bailey doubled and Brandon Crawford singled him home. Taylor TYLER Rogers got two outs in the bottom of the 8th but put two on and they summoned closer Camilo Doval. He loaded the bases but got the final out. In the 9th he put a man on, got a double play, then put two on to face Goldschmidt but he retired the slugger with one pitch. Whew!

The Giants are now 16-15 on the road (and 18-17 at home). Alex Cobb goes tomorrow at 4:45 PT.

Go Giants!

Nice words about Patrick Bailey.

As you'd expect with a raw hitter Bailey's walk rate has halved and his K rate has jumped from his days in the minors. Both he and Schmitt have a ways to go. But it's exciting that they've been contributors right away. And they are both known for their glove work and will likely take over the two most important positions.

Ideally BCraw will get back to his normal self and be the main guy at SS for the rest of the season. Schmitt would still play a lot because he backs up 3B-SS-2B and he can platoon against lefties.

Catching has more questions. Can Bailey and Sabol handle the task the rest of the way? Defensively Bailey already looks like a polished player. What will happen with Bart?

This team needs another starting pitcher.

Again spell check turned Tyler into Taylor. Mine does the same. I have a suggestion for Desclafani when he pitches on Wednesday. Just give Goldschmidt the automatic walk. The guy has more ownage of Desclafani then the dodgers. Don't bother wasting your time pitching to him. Yesterday was another game where I thought the home plate ump favored the Card's pitcher. I do not know what it is in the way our guys stand at the plate or what, that invites a bunch of not so great pitches to be called strikes. In addition the giants, Webb, and Tyler Rogers had pitches (one each) right over the plate called balls. I counted the negative calls against the giants at 13, and only 2 against the cards. Webb did get a pitch a couple of inches below the strike zone called a strike. Also Doval had a pitch in the zone called a ball. So 3 different style giants pitchers getting bad calls. Webb was not getting pitches at the top of the zone or just on top of the zone. St. Louis got a bunch of very high pitches called strikes. I know folks in general do not want an electronic strike zone, but the more games I watch the more it seems inevitable. Philly thought they went ahead 10-9 in the top of the 9th against Zona. Only to have the homer called foul. Sometimes I wonder if it is the same shot that just happened, and the replay shot. One of the replay angles that made the ball look significantly foul almost looked like a different shot? Zona took it but Realmuto did hit for the cycle. Will Realmuto be a hall of famer?

Realmuto is a beast. He's certainly a great player.

Thanks--it WAS Tyler, and I'm sure I meant to type it!

Robo-umps are OK by me.
