Back to winning ways

SF 13  CHC 3

After back-to-back low-scoring losses (3-2 Friday and 4-0 Saturday) the Giants broke out with a home run barrage and salvaged the series with a big win. Joc Pederson smacked two homers in a perfect day (four hits and a walk in five PA). Thairo Estrada also walloped two big flies scoring three and driving in four. It was another bullpen game. After yesterday's sterling opening, a two-inning, 19-pitch clean sheet, John Brebbia was the man once again. He got in trouble right away but wriggled out of it. He's allowed only two runs in his last 15 appearances (16-1/3 IP). Rookies Tristan Beck (2 IP, 2 R) and Ryan Walker (3 IP, 1 R) took the next five innings. Only one of those runs was earned as the Giants made a ghastly FOUR errors in that span. Fortunately the lineup kept the heat on all game, scoring two in the 1st, two in the 3rd, one in the 4th, three in the 5th, two in the 6th and three in the 7th.

Luke Jackson and Taylor Rogers got the next six outs and in an unexpected development BRANDON CRAWFORD was given the ball in the 9th inning! It was 13-3 at that point. BCraw had never before pitched in the big leagues. He put two guys on but got the next three outs to seal the win. They are back over .500 at 33-32.

The team travels to St. Louis for a three-game set with the 27-39 Cardinals. Logan Webb gets the start at 4:45 Pacific.

Go Giants!

Two interesting points. On one of the giants sites, a poster wrote, Of course I expected the giants to score a lot of runs today, it is the day before Webb pitches. Then with Webb on the mound the next day, they will struggle to score no matter how Webb pitches, and if per chance they do hit, it will be one of those times that Webb does not have his good stuff. The second thing, is about giving Schmitt 2 errors on that one play. He bobbled the ball, but still had the throw been accurate, he had the guy at first. But the throw was wild and the runner was safe and advanced. The explanation in the box score was 2 errors, the bobble, and the throw. I only see that as one error, and in all the years of watching baseball I cannot remember a time when a fielder on a similar play was charged with 2 errors. The bobble did not cause him to be safe at first, the throw did. And a third thing now that I am back into yesterdays giants blowout win over the Cubs. Beck had truly struck out Wisdom on 3 pitches, but the ump called a pitch right over the plate a ball. About 8 pitches later, Wisdom ended up walking, Another out was made before any runs scored and Beck should have been out of the inning. He ended up throwing around 25 extra pitches in that outing all because of that one call, and that he did not recover fully from it. May have cost him an inning in that outing, but he threw enough pitches that he will be sent down for at least a few days, and Winn will come up as a viable arm. It is possible that the rotation could have Beck as a starter, if he can stay sharp. Manaea did pitch nicely vs the Cubs. I know many fans enjoyed Crawford pitching, and so did the players, but I am definitely not a big fan of that. Do we need a Jose Canseco moment? Interestingly Crawford threw close to the pitch speed of the prior day's Cub pitcher who was almost unhittable.
