New Giants

Giants draft OF Hunter Bishop with the 10th pick and 1B Logan Wyatt with the 51st pick. I think the draft is an anachronism and should be abolished. Players should be free agents from the start. Perhaps with the growth of the international game and the larger "market" for baseball talent we will see an erosion of the owner-controlled model and more freedom and flexibility for players. The athletes have a very short window of productive seasons, it seems un-American to me to force them to sign away their earning power. I know: vox clamantis in deserto.

Regardless, welcome aboard Hunter and Logan!

Here's a look at Logan Wyatt, 1B, LH hitter. The profile looks at five corner infielders, Wyatt is the fourth on the list so you have to scroll down. Andrew Vaughan of Cal is listed at the top (he went to CWS with 3rd pick).

The same site profiles Hunter Bishop, CF, LH hitter. They list him as the number one outfield prospect so it looks like the Giants did well to get him. OFs JJ Bleday and Riley Greene went ahead of him.

Wyatt will be 22 in November and Bishop will be 21 this month. Most guys don't reach their full potential until they are 24 or 25. Belt is signed through 2021 so it may be possible to project a debut for Wyatt in 2022. Let's hope he can be as good a pro hitter as he has been as an amateur. Giants obviously need OF help, perhaps Bishop and Heliot Ramos (last year's 1st round pick, #19) will come up together! Wouldn't that be something?

Roughly 2 out of every 3 first-rounders make an ML roster. About half of second-rounders make the big leagues.

So, you never know. Becoming a world-class pro athlete is a tough business. Being fans, we suffer from a sort of "survivor bias" in that we only see the guys who make it to the ultimate level. And a huge number of them fail! The regulars that we watch on a daily basis are the outliers--we are watching the "freaks" and that makes them seem "normal" because we see them boot grounders, whiff, and otherwise look bad just because baseball is a hard game.

For perspective, take a look at the 2009 draft class, ten years ago. Even a really top-notch guy like Zack Wheeler has yet to reach 10 WAR and he'll be 30 next season. So it is a crap shoot, even with all the analysis and scouting being done.

Giants take a chance with the 87th pick, a HS kid from Florida named Grant McCray, lefty hitter and also plays CF. He has a verbal commitment to Florida State. His dad was Rodney McCray who brief shot with the White Sox and Mets 1990-1992.

With the 116th pick they get Louisville SS Tyler Fitzgerald.

That's as far as I'm willing to go on draft updates!

Maybe they can find some 4th round (BCraw '08) or 5th-round gems (Belt '09) again. Baggs pointed out in a tweet that the 2008 draft was also four straight position players: Posey, Conor Gillaspie, Roger Kieschnick, and Crawford. Pretty good haul.
