The Giants left their bats somewhere back in July and need to find them again. They've scored 14 runs in their last 5 games--all in August--and have one win in the bunch. Tonight the Nationals benefited from eight walks and a lot of long counts as Giants pitchers (other than Trevor Gott) were sloppy and could not get it done. The hitters had no luck with some hard hit balls that found gloves and not ground, but they have to do better than zero.
Rookie Conner Menez gets the start tomorrow night (6:45). 35-year old Anibal Sanchez, who pitched against the Giants in the 2012 World Series, goes for the Nationals.

How Smardjy managed to throw 97 pitches in 4 innings and give up only 1 run, I'll never know. There were 97 balls thrown in 8 innings pitched by the Giants that were not considered strikes by the pitch tracker. That's 12 per inning.
We haven't had a starter give us more than 5 innings (Madbum and Anderson both went 5, the game Madbum pitched was our 1 win) since Smardjy's last 6 inning start. Couple that with 14 runs in 5 games and you do not have a formula for winning baseball. Duggar is looking more and more like he was an early season flash-in-the-pan and less like a regular player. Belt looks pretty lost at the plate, and has but 1 walk to go with his 6 hits this month. Scooter Gennett? Really?
Also, watching our frequent relief appearances, it feels very much like September call-ups are getting auditions, not like our team is concerned about winning. Although, when you've gifted Washington 3 of their 4 runs and have no apparent interest in scoring any of your own, why not?
Joe Panik cut. Boo.
Just saw that. Bummer. Not surprising since the deadline when they picked up Scooter and the prospect (Dubon). The kid will probably start at 2B next year.
Giants pick up another arm, RH Justin Haley, who goes to AAA.
