That's not gonna work

LA 7  SF 2

Jeff Samardzija has started three games this season. He's faced 65 batters over the course of 13-2/3 innings and given up 18 hits and four walks and has hit two guys. One-third of the hits (6) have been homers! He's struck out only five guys. The 16 RA (15 earned) is good for a 9.88 (!) ERA, a 9.29 FIP, and -0.5 fWAR. Yup, you can have "negative" WAR. I don't know what the Giants are going to do about Shark.

Johnny Cueto today at 6:10 p.m.

Go Giants!

We are 1/4 of the way through the season, 15 games out of 60. Here are the offensive leaders (via wOBA): Solano, Yaz, Tromp, Flores, Dickerson, Slater, Ruf, Belt. All these guys are over .310 (.310 is about league average), with Dubon knocking on the door at .290.

Here are the leaders (via wRC+): Solano, Yaz, Tromp, Flores, Dickerson, Slater, Ruf, Belt. All these guys are over 100 (100 is about league average). Again, Dubon is knocking on the door at 89.

Evan Longoria is just below Dubon, after that it drops off quickly. Sandoval, Crawford, and Pence are in Duggar territory, and all below Jaylin Davis. One has to wonder how long they'll stick with Pablo and Pence. I get that they needed some veterans in the lineup, you don't want to give the appearance of tanking by playing all rookies and nobodies, but the rookies and nobodies are doing OK, and Flores and Solano provide the veteran presence.

We'll see!

So, they solved the Smardj problem by putting him on the 10-day IL and calling up Andrew Suarez.

I think there was some hope that Cueto (who is signed for next year) and/or Shark (who is a free agent) would show a little something before the trade deadline (August 31st) and a pennant-chasing club in need of a 4th starter might dangle a prospect to the Giants for one of them.

Cueto will be hard to trade even if he pitches well because of his 2021 $21M salary, and Samardzija would strictly be a playoff-push rental. Of course, they have to pitch well!

Cueto could certainly still be a useful pitcher next year if he's healthy. He may not be the ace he once was but a veteran leader who can log 30+ starts is not a bad thing to have with a young staff.

I hope he can bounce back tonight and start to be more effective.
