Open Thread, 2023 . . .

Hi, everyone! I will be "away from my desk" for the next week or so. Posting and commenting will be a bit of a challenge so I may not keep up. I'll be following the team, of course, and rooting for the lads to do well. Let's use the comments section as an "open thread" to talk about things. (And perhaps the Mystic Zo will honor us with a post or two.) Meanwhile, chime in a lot and say what is on your mind! I'm looking forward to this 2023 season.

Go Giants!

Logan Webb struck out 12 in 7. That is a Giants record for opening day. Gerrit Cole struck out 11 in 6. That was a Yankee record for opening day. I think the 32 total was also a record. Logan is a ground ball pitcher, unlike Cole, who pitches for Ks. Giants hitting was less noteworthy, but it's hard to know what to make of it from this game.

Giants not in the game. I was upset to see the new season start with Laz Diaz behind the plate. Terrible ump. Giants are down to a 161 best wins. I also am not enamored at the giants schedule to start the season, although not upset about the start vs. the Yankees for historical reasons, but otherwise all those games to start the season vs. the A.L. not enjoying the idea. I think that may be an understatement on my part. With all the changes, and they had to do this to the schedule as well. For some of us old timers, I, and I assume others are feeling it less than usual.

Yeah, the schedule is weird. 3 AL teams, the first 2 in cities that have a much greater chance of crappy weather than San Francisco (NY and Chicago) then KC at home. We play our two sets of games against Miami and Milwaukee by the end of May but don't meet the Rockies once until June. We are back-weighted against our own division, which I guess is better than being underweight against them at the end of September. We play the blue goo 7 of our 12 games in September.

what I liked about playing your own division a lot of games, it also that they are usually spread out, so injuries during one part of the season, may not affect the games against your divisional rivals during another part of the season. If there is a big injury at the time you play your division rivals, it could be a more important issue. I did not get that last minute trade the giants made. Likely when Haniger and Slater come back he will be gone anyway. I thought that was an unnecessary move, but maybe it will work out. Seemed as if we had the depth we needed not sure I understand this move. Some of the high K rate could be because of Laz Diaz.

Did you see the story line that Michael Conforto is the 17th different opening day left fielder in a row for the Giants? The last time there was a repeat was in 2007, when it was Barry Bonds. That's not exactly a model of consistency, or for that matter, a model of putting together a decent outfield (who are healthy on opening day). As mentioned above, the Giants looked listless at the plate. But if there is a bright spot, Michael Conforto is runner-up. He had a hit (Estrada had 2). There were only 4. Really, it would have been a much better game if Judge had homered off of Webb just like he did, but the game ended 1 - 0. Also, it turns out that Bryce Johnson, the back-up center fielder designate, was not on the opening day roster and Brett Wisely was. Also Sean Hjelle was left off so as to add this guy they got for loose change from Kansas City yesterday, Matt Beaty, who was of no help. They are both viewed as disposable with a short shelf-life, but we'll see. All that was apparently done between the time the press stopped noticing Wednesday and Thursday game time.

Giants blanked twice in New York, against a team that has pitching injuries. Up to their old tricks again of making a minor leaguer look like Cy Young. The Yankees thought so much of Jhony Brito's 2-hit 5-inning shut out that they sent him back to the minors.

Giants beat the White Sox in their home opener with 7 home runs. That's the most since 1961 when they hit 8 against Milwaukee (Mays hit 4 of them). It's a great story, just Google Willie Mays 4 homer game. The Giants, after 4 games, in which they scored no runs at all in 50% of them, lead the league in home runs. Disco looked good.

Here we are again, a team that went 81 and 81 last year, is now 2 and 2. with 19 runs scored, and 19 runs given up.
