Lucky 13

SF 1  OAK 0

Logan Webb threw a complete game shutout and the Giants edged the A's to split the series. The Giants have six total shutouts this season but this was their first by one guy. It's the 13th complete game shutout in MLB this season (there have been 210 team shutouts). It was Webb's third complete game in his career and his second shutout.

Greg Maddux (1986-2008) had 109 CGs and 35 were shutouts. Baseball's active CG leaders are Justin Verlander (26) and Clayton Kershaw (25). They are also the active shutout leaders, Kershaw with 15 and Verlander with 9.

Webb leads MLB in innings pitched with 144-1/3.

The team travels to Cincinnati today for a weekend three-game set. Friday is 4:10 PT. The starters have not been listed but it looks like Harrison-Snell-Birdsong.

Go Giants!

Webb threw the complete game in 1:55. He said his goal is to throw a Maddux, less than 100 pitches. It was a great performance, and had to be as the Giants have reinstituted their no-offense offense just in time for the trip. Because of off days, the Giants can give 4 pitchers 5 days rest into next week. Birdsong is still listed as a minor leaguer this morning.

RH OF Jerar Encarnacion is set to join the team in Cincy. With Flores and Estrada out there's room on the 26-man. Blake Sabol was called up as well.

Roster Resource says Birdsong will be recalled today.

I'd like to see more Maddux-type pitchers. Rick Reuschel comes to mind. Both had big sinkers and great command. Work fast, throw strikes, get ground balls . . . it's a recipe for success. More balls in play, fewer strikeouts, but longer outings . . . what am I missing?

Must have been a great day to pitch, as former giant pitcher who could never get anyone out, gave up only 1 run in 5 plus innings depite have an era approaching infinity.

Encarnacion was a Oaxaca Guerrero.

Right on. I heard he was tearing up the Mexican League. That's what got him noticed.

Just checking B-R, he had 19 HR in 26 G for the Guerreros! And 10 HR in 33 G with the River Cats.

Looks like it is Snell tonight. Harrison tomorrow and Ray on Sunday.

Roster Resource now says Birdsong's recall date is August 6th and that he's slated to start that game.
