A fine outing from Landen Roupp led to a 3-0 Giants win on Thursday in the finale against the Reds. Roupp's the team ace so far this season. It's exciting to have a young pitcher in the system mature into a legit major-leaguer. Roupp was a 12th-round pick in 2021.
Logan Webb picked up a win today after the Giants battered the Nationals 10-5 in the series opener in D.C. Webb has not been himself but he's still a workhorse and trails only Max Fried and Sandy Alcantara in innings pitched. Webb's walked more than his usual share of guys this year and the hits seem to come in bunches so far. But it's early and I expect he will come into form soon.
The lineup had a fine time today, banging out 15 hits including three homers. Drew Gilbert hit one of them, that was his first MLB hit. Heliot Ramos had a three-run variety to open the scoring. Like Rafael Devers he really needs to get his bat going! The Nats don't have a great pitching staff so maybe the Giants can get hot and beat up on them.
Tomorrow's game is at 1:05 Pacific. Adrian Houser gets the start. Sunday's game is early, 10:35, and it looks like Robbie Ray is lined up for that one.
Go Giants!

Seems as if Roupp has better stats than Ray in all categories except K's per 9 innings, but it is close. Odd that Ray's WAR is 0.7 and Roupp's is 0.4. Not sure how they came up with that?
FanGraphs has Roupp at 0.7 and Ray at 0.1!!
Ray gets hurt in FIP and WAR calculations because he walks a lot of guys and gives up homers. Both of those categories are heavily weighted in sabermetrics.
Strikeouts are king. The more you whiff guys, the better the saber-stats like you. And then it is homers allowed and walks allowed. Hits are less important. "Strand rate" is a big one, leaving guys on base instead of letting them score.
It takes a while for WAR frameworks to be useful. You need some data. You get a lot of noise in the early season.
Definitely come to the conclusion that these guys just do not want to walk. Several full counts, giants hacked at definite ball 4 pitches. If they don't take their walks, pitchers will not have to throw strikes. Sloppy fielding, even if no errors, has hurt this team. Can our gold glove catcher hang on to a toss from the outfield or a relay throw to tag out the runner? This gold glove catcher must have a world record in drops.
Susac is gunning for his job!
A step forward, a step back. 0 for 11 with RISP yesterday. In addition to swinging at ball 4, the Giants did a fair amount of watching strikes down the pipe. Adames looked clueless.
Interesting, as one day Adames looks totally honed in, and the next day he looks clueless. He doesn't challenge on a called strike 3 inches off the plate, but challenges on a pitch right over the plate. Perhaps he needs glasses. The lack of taking walks will doom this team.
Heard Susac is now on the 10 day injured list!!!!
