Sanchez deals, Giants fold

Losing is one thing, sharing first place is another. I don't like it. I wanted first place all to ourselves. Now we have to share it with those stinkin' Padres.

Jonathan Sanchez' GameScore was 78, not quite as good as his 84 against Pittsburgh last week.

I can't believe that we lost. He gave up ONE hit. JSanchez was pretty magical. We had guys in scoring position (Nate was on 3rd with no outs). I miss DeRosa and Rowand being there 8( Velez scares me and Edgar doesn't help. At least the Doodoos lost too.

What's this Gamescore that you speak of?

GameScore is a starting pitcher stat. It's fun to look at with the Giants because we have such good starters. The ESPN box scores include it at the bottom. I have a link (SCOREBOARD) to that on the "RMC Baseball" list on the sidebar.

Failing to score after Nate's triple left me numb. I was barely able to write anything when the game was over.

Jon Garland's 2010 Game Log.

He's hasn't quite been the stabilizing, veteran-presence innings-eater the Padres were hoping for, at least not yet. Perhaps the lads can kick him while he's down.

OK, class, let's put on your thinking caps for this next one.

Name three ways you can fail to score with a speedy runner on third base and no outs. Think about it for a minute - OK, who's first - Eli?

Hit a soft ground ball right to the third baseman! Very good! Even a grounder to short or second would allow a runner to at least get a lead and maybe take off with the throw. OK, we'll let a veteran answer for the next one - Bengie?

Pop up to the infield - that's right! OK, one more way to fail to score, no hands? I think I'll call on Eugenio - I know you can answer this.

Que?

That's exactly correct! A big fat K!!! This class gets an A for anti-offense!

There is one good thing about the Giants having a bit of a losing stretch: Zo's commentary is FABULOUS!!! I don't want us to lose but at least I have something to look forward to...

So Sanchez has made two outstanding starts in a row. But the team is reverting to the way it played in the first half of last year, with pathetic offense. Renteria has especially fallen off, after his spectacular beginning in the first three games.
Now we settle into the long haul of the season. It's likely we'll be out of first place sometime soon; hopefully we'll fight back to the top.

THE CASE FOR A LACKLUSTER START (or, "Why I am Happy that the Giants are Quickly Losing a Few Games"):

The absolute worst thing that could happen to the Giants is a super-quick start. First, as we all know, they could never sustain it for a whole season anyway.

More importantly, a very fast start would result in the geniuses who run the team feeling validated in their perpetually boneheaded personnel & managerial decisions. Their heads would swell beyond their already mythical proportions, & they would not recover from this 'high' until well past when the bottom had dropped out, & we had sunk in the standings. Until September, even in the face of diminishing success & 4th place, they would point to the fast start as 'proof' that they had the construction of the roster & the starting lineup 'right'.

If you, as the ultra-loyal Giants fans I know you are, have any hope of seeing something as truly marvelous as Buster Posey participating on the major league roster before September or becoming a starting player at some point in 2010, you will join me in hoping that the Giants remain around the .500 mark for the first couple of months of the season.

If the team achieves a level of mediocrity, I will maintain some hope that there could be some positive changes in store later this season. Maybe, they could even accidentally make one that propels us into the post-season.

Win = good

Loss = bad

Even the fucked up FO situation in San Francisco does not change that.

I'm on record as saying that the Giants will need not only a call-up for Buster Posey but a mid-season acquisition to get a proper offense. That being said, it is April, and a few ugly losses shouldn't upset us too much. There are 148 games left. I'm still convinced we will finish ahead of the Padres, for example, despite looking overmatched against their 4th and 5th starters.
