Vlog #12 : Another Typical Win

1-0 win vs. SD

OK, I like pitcher's duels as much as the next guy, but this is getting a little crazy.  Walk-off wins are totally bitchin' though.  Click below for the latest episode of joy!

MLB-wide 4.28 RA/G this season so far. 4.25 last season, 4.07 in 2014, according to B-R. Following the Giants one would think three runs scored is a lot!

JohnnyC had 66 pitches over the first 6 innings. Not to mention working quickly--game time 2:37. It's all coming up roses so far for our new co-ace.

Nice win! - I see you've left Timmy lying on the field at Phone Co. Park. It was nice to see him in your last Vlog saying goodbye. Now you need a Johnny C Bobblehead but I don't see any listed in the Promotions - what's up with that?

Cueto has been THE ace so far, fortunately MadBum has caught up and is the other co-ace now.
The Vlog keeps getting better. You should go pro bro, yo?
Romo will pitch Wednesday at Raley field. Who wants to join me there?

It's a noon start.

Wow SIR, you don't miss a thing. Yep, Timmy is laying in state in the ballpark. Not sure what to do with him...maybe some angel wings? Believe me, next year there will be MANY JohnnyC promo's. So many little crazy things to pick from.

Hey Bro, I would love to go with you but I still have a couple weeks left at the salt mine. I am visiting SacTown this weekend so maybe we can go then??

Yeah, I'm not so sure I can make a fortune as a YouTube vlogger, but thanks for the complement.

You make a fortune by saying outrageous bullshit, then by insulting everyone who disagrees with you. At least that's how Drumpf does it.

Everyone is scoring over 4 runs a game this year!!! Where are those games cuz the ones I watch are nuthing like that. Maybe 4 runs a game if you add both teams!

I think Kuiper said this last night: Weird, wonderful wins like last night happen during special seasons. Is anyone else getting that magical feeling again?

Giants had a great May last year, 21-9 including an 8-game win streak. Played just about .500 the rest of the way, though. This year's team has better starting pitching so I expect they should keep the mo' going.

From Baseball Musings:

"Seven weeks into the season, 2016 remains ahead of 2015 at the same point. MLB games produce 8.57 runs per game in 2016 versus 8.40 runs per game in 2015."

Like you said, they are watching some other team!

Great vlog as always.

Well, we all got to see a 9-6 game, so there have been a few. Just not lately. I like 1-0 games ... always have. This has been a nice roll - we need a #4 Starter - then, we can really go on a roll.

Imagine what this is going to be like, when Buster starts hitting.

Yeah, people forget but we had a number of pitchers pitching well for us early in 2015, Lincecum and Heston, as well as Bumgarner, plus Vogey went on a nice stretch once he got fully into the rotation in May. Hudson was the laggard, but nothing like the anchor that Peavy has been. Unfortunately, Lincecum's injury was slowly getting worse, then hit like a sledgehammer, and Heston hit the wall (or was figured out) in August.

We have a #4 starter, uh, Cainer, been doing pretty well in his last few starts, basically much like he was before he had his Perfecto. It has been a long weird journey since that great accomplishment, part of me wish they would have just took him out.

Peavy is still #4, Cain #5. That isn't going to change for a while. Remember, Bochy is absolutely faithful to Peavy.

Cain may be the 5th guy in line but he's the #4 in the sense that he's the 4th-best. So we have, at this point, four reliable starters. (Assuming Matty is back to form and this resurgence isn't just a random blip.) We've been thinking, that if he was healthy, there was no reason why he couldn't perform at a better-than-average ML level. If that is indeed the case then the Giants have to feel good about the "bottom" of the rotation. You don't have a 5th starter in the post-season, obviously, and your ace only gets maybe one more start than the rest of the crew over the course of the season anyway so the no. 1, no. 2, and no. 3 designations only matter in match-ups with other teams. As we saw this weekend sometimes that doesn't matter, either.

I have no problem with Boch being loyal to his guys. That's why he gets the performances he gets from people. They may be world-class athletes but they still need to have their egos stroked and have their people show confidence in them. They can't do it all themselves! I hope Peavy can find his old form, I really do. And I'm not sure anyone else is quite ready to step in, either. I thought maybe Ricky Romero might have something left, but that's not happening. Heston would be the logical guy to take his spot, I suppose, if he can get it together. I think patience with Peavy will pay off in the long haul. He only has to be "cromulent" not "dominant"!

Johnny Cueto has won 3 complete games against the Pads, and done it with all of 4 runs of support - for all 3 games. He has, meanwhile, allowed 1 run in those 27 innings.

And on a related note, Rob Manfred needs to be quiet. For at least the next decade. I get the sense that he wants to be in the spotlight, and that is absolutely the way to ruin the sport. Ideally, we should have to think really hard to remember a commissioner's name. I have opined in the past that we are now in an era of historically great pitching, having transitioned from an era of historically great hitting. I am enjoying every minute of it. Please don't take away our 1 - 0 games, they are the most tense, exciting outcome that there is in sports.

Wow, learn something new every day: cromulent. And from the Simpsons!

I'm okay with changing the strike zone, mainly because the Giants focus on training their pitchers to learn how to induce weak contact, as well as pounding the strike zone, so as not to give up many walks. This change will affect pitchers (i.e. most everyone else) who can't control their pitches well enough. And as much as it would help those who strike out a lot, I think it would help teams with good contact hitters in their lineup (like the Giants).

And yes, that is what I mean, the Giants have a #4 in Cainer, I was not referring to current positioning. I'm okay with the commitment to Peavy, he'll probably be OK again sometime in the second half, much like he did in 2014 and 2015, but I would have been happier if the Giants had signed Lincecum to be the 4th starter and push Peavy into the long relief role.

He timed everything wrong, if he wanted to return to the Giants, he should know that the Giants don't make starters moves until around June, and with Peavy's ups and downs, and minors lack of standouts, the Giants could have made a move for him as a starter. Plus, at some point, they could have gone with the 6-man rotation that I've been hoping that they would do in order to limit fatigue with their starters in the dog days of August/September and fewer days off. I think he will prove to be a good starter again, and hopefully we can resign him once Peavy's contract is up (but I'm guessing not, I assume the Giants will sign a placeholder starter, since we have Heston, Blackburn, Stratton, Beede, Mejia, Bickford all getting closer to being ready for their chance, another Wellemeyer type)
