Angst

We've had it before, and we'll probably have it again.  The Giants had a horrible, horrible, awful season.  There were a lot of reasons.  But then the Giants-less post season came along, and then the Astros won it all, and it could have been so much worse, so we didn't have to stress about the Giants for awhile, and now that's over and the General Managers are meeting in The GM's are meeting in Orlando, and now we have to start worrying all over again.   Brian Sabean has said he needs a third baseman, a center fielder, and a better bullpen.  "'We do need upgrades in certain and key positions. High on the wish list is to get younger, more athletic and play better defense overall, Sabean said. "

Bullpen, bullpen, bullpen.  That's what I concluded was the Giants biggest need, and I still think so.  The Giants are not going to be a team that leads the league in home runs.  They can't move enough players who aren't going to hit high HR numbers and the ballpark doesn't lend itself to many home runs.  But the fact that MLB juiced the ball and players are swinging for the fences does not mean that a team built for pitching and getting on base can't be successful.  The Astros are a case in point.  But it does mean that the Giants have to do some things much better.  Like not strike out as much.  And strike other guys out more.  And for Willie's sake, win some of those games where your offense gives you only a small lead.

The Giants picked up the option on Pablo Sandoval.  I get it, he's just as cheap as possible.  He does not represent an upgrade over anyone in my view.  I know he's strong and can hit home runs.  He hit 5 as a Giant in 47 games.  That's 15 or so in a season.  I'd rather look to Christian Arroyo to provide some kind of spark.  I'd rather have Eduardo Nunez back, but I think he is probably staying in Boston after his success there last season.

But the Giants do need power.  None of our left field experiments really worked.  Denard Span and Hunter Pence are both pretty good players when healthy, but you know what?  .272, .427 slugging, 12 hr (Span) and .260, .385, and 13 hr just aren't enough.  Pence was barely a positive WAR and Span was negative.  And you know what would really help?  Someone on the team with presence.  The kind of guy who pitchers worry about a couple batters before he gets to the plate because they know he can change the game with one swing.  Like Barry used to be.  Someone like Giancarlo Stanton.

And here's the Chronicle talking about how nice it would be to have Giancarlo Stanton as a Giant.  You know what?  Every team wants Giancarlo Stanton.  That means that the Giants, who do not have the best farm system, would have to pay most of his salary.  If the Giants are not willing to do that, and probably even if they are, they are unlikely to be the best trading partners from the Marlins' standpoint.  Here's a weird scenario, from the New York Post: the Giants get Giancarlo Stanton and send Christian Arroyo and Seth Corry, their Round 3 draft pick, to Miami, and Johnny Cueto to the Cubs.  The Marlins also get Ben Zobrist and Ian Happ from the Cubs.   What do you all think of that?

Well, of course all that and have a bunch of guys perform better next year.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Giants will be one of the most improved teams next year.  This really shouldn't surprise anyone, and it is not because I'm an optimist.  It's because they played so far under their potential last year that even approaching the level of what they are capable of, even mediocrity, would be a big step up.

I am not so sold on how horrible Pablo Sandoval is. He was a 96 million dollar player that had some injuries, and did not live up to his potential, but he may finally be healthy. I am not sure that if he is healthy that he will not perform above league average for league minimum. It seems as if 3rd is not a place we should be spending a lot of money on. We also have Arroyo in case of a Sandoval Fail, for about league minumum. If we were to get Nunez back for about 7 million he could also be a backup. Problem is we were a last place team with more than a half season of a fairly good Nunez. Our pen does not look that bad, except we really need an excellent lefty, and I am not sure that Will Smith will fill the bill. We need to do what we did the first half of 2016, and had done prior to that. Take walks, not give up many, strike out a bunch of guys, and not strike out that much ourselves. Also at one point the giants were a good team in getting a lot of pitches out of the opposition, now some teams seem to do that to the giants. All of those little things add up. Our pitchers need to hold runners to avoid easy steals. So that really leaves the outfield. I would not mind a double upgrade. A decent hitting centerfielder, and a power hitting corner fielder that has already proven himself as a solid major league player. Span and Pence could move down the totem pole. Cueto and Bumgarner must come back with a vengeance. Not sure if the giants can win the divison, but they could more than compete for the wildcard again.

No way Giants have the juice to get Stanton. Plus they NEED all those young guys. The biggest barrier is the amount of money already committed. So the people who are getting that money (Posey, Cueto, Belt, Craw, Pence, Samardzija, Melancon, etc) have to produce. Any FA upgrade will not be a top line guy, they can't afford to lose draft picks and that will rule out a lot of players. It will be a difficult next few seasons. They will improve, I agree, but there's not enough out there to add, it has to come from within.

And I love that picture!

Rumor has it the Giants are interested in Billy Hamilton, whose value is tied up entirely in his speed (lifetime OBA .298!!!!) and so would only be a defensive upgrade (a needed one in CF). He'd have to come via trade. Lorenzo Cain is a FA, and better choice, but the Giants would have to forfeit draft picks, and I don't think that's a good idea. Cain would be the right kind of player to add but not at that cost. Billy Hamilton is fun to watch run, but my god the last thing the Giants need is another limp bat.

By the way, a classic photo, Zo!

Billy Hamilton has some skills, but I agree w/ Mark - the low OBP is a bummer. Lorenzo Cain is starting to reach his declining years, so not the wisest of choices. The one name that I've heard connected to the Giants recently who appears to be both interesting, young enough to have some room to improve, & a defensive upgrade is Jackie Bradley, Jr..

JBJ is definitely intriguing.

Here's a FanGraphs piece outlining a case for acquiring Stanton.

I'd be shocked if the Giants pulled it off. But I think it would be awesome to have him in the lineup. The money doesn't worry me, the Giants are richer than they want us to believe and they have to start matching up with LA at some point. Who do the Giants have to swing such a deal? Well, I think this is where it falls down--I don't see the team having the trade chips. But the rumors keep flying!

From MLBTR:

Jake Arrieta, Wade Davis, Lance Lynn, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Cobb, Greg Holland, and Carlos Santana received one-year, $17.4MM qualifying offers from their teams earlier this week. If those players sign elsewhere, here’s a look at the draft picks the signing team would lose.

Competitive Balance Tax Payors: Tigers, Dodgers, Yankees, Giants, Nationals

If one of these teams signs a qualified free agent, it must forfeit its second-highest and fifth-highest pick in the 2018 draft. The team will also have its international signing bonus pool reduced by $1MM. The Tigers are highly unlikely to sign one of the nine players listed above, but the other four teams might. The Giants’ second-highest pick will fall somewhere in the 30s overall, so they stand to lose the most if they sign a qualified free agent.

Also from MLBTR via Rosenthal’s gossip sources, the Giants have submitted to the Marlins a trade proposal for Stanton, which I hope turns out to be inadequate, I think. I’m tired of their being able, reasonably, to plead poverty; I’m tired of their lacking depth, as a big time trade makes more likely; and when Stanton’s joints, back, obliques, hamate bones, and/or concussion-free days provide come-uppence I will be more sick and tired yet.

Last sentence above, should be “comeuppance,” not “come-uppence,” which is a plea addressed to the BA of the Giants’ right fielder.

All the Cards outfielders hit .282/.346/.473

There are 10 of them if the Giants want one….

Grant has the rundown here:
