Collapse

SD 5 SF 4
Derek Holland started the 5th with a 4-2 lead on the strength of homers from Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen. He unfortunately could not get through the inning, allowing another run, and had to be relieved with two outs and the bases loaded. Reyes Moronta got the final out as well as the first two in the 6th but it took both Josh Osich and Cory Gearrin to get the third out. In the 7th Joe Panik tripled with one out and the Giants had a great chance to pad their tenuous one-run lead. McCutchen, up next, smoked a liner to right that was caught. Panik, tagging up, was thrown out at home on a relay. It was a disaster. Getting thrown out at home is always a disaster, but this was a particularly egregious disaster. Sure enough Gearrin gave up a single and a homer to the first two batters in the bottom of the 7th and it was 5-4 Padres just-like-that. Another discouraging loss--a collapse, really. I thought the team would put on a much better show in San Diego.

Rookie Tyler Beede gets the ball tomorrow afternoon. Go Giants!

I know its not good to be a cry baby fan, and complain about the calls. However, the calls in general so far this season in the majority of games are looking as if the giants are playing against and extra man, and that man is the umpiring crew. This is the second bad call going against the giants on replay at the plate. I watched that play every which way and sideways through multiple feeds and in slow motion, and not one time did I see them tag him out. Can those calls shift the momentum or what? Also the ball strike calls at the plate especially at crucial moments in crucial at bats, have really been hell for the giants. They need to hit, their makeshift pitching staff is doing better than expected. Their hitting, especially with men on base, has left a lot to be desired. Looking forward to a possible winning streak.

Krukow and Kuiper agree that the replay was called incorrectly. And so do I. If they can't get it right with a replay, what's the point of having them? Just let the ump make an incorrect call and move on. And quit the bullshit about needing incontrovertible evidence to reverse a call. Either you can see it, and call it, or you can't and leave it be. The idea that they to overturn a call you need some higher burden of proof than to leave it (whether it's correct or not) is ludicrous.

I've always felt that purpose of replay is to avoid the obvious mistakes like the infamous Jim Joyce blown call on the shoulda-been perfect game, or the Don Denkinger 1985 World Series Game 6 mistake. That sort of thing. Using the replay to do frame-by-frame analysis to see if the fingernail beat the glove to the bag seems silly. Better to just put sensors on the bases and the uniforms (like in fencing) and let it be settled by electronic beeps, fer chrissakes. Either that or let them appeal as many times as they want but they only get 30 seconds to decide. If you can't see it in 30 seconds the call stands.

Giants losing again today. This is getting really depressing.
