The new coaching staff

37, 35, 38, 36, 31, 29, 33, and 31. And 58, of course.

That's how old these guys are. Or, perhaps I should say, how young they are. I just turned 60, so they seem rather young to me. But that's good. Major League Baseball is a young man's endeavor.

The article is worth taking a look at even though it is a bit long.

I wonder if they will have a assigned first base coach or rotate the hitting guys out there. I remember Hensley Muelens had a rule that if you hit a homer you had to tell him what kind of pitch you hit when you got back to the dugout. Maybe a first base coach who works with the hitter can give him feedback on his plate appearance. They seem to do that anyway, at least with some guys. I just note that a first base coach is not listed.

According to Baggs:

They still must hire a first-base coach as well as one more person who will serve in a quality control capacity with a title to be determined. Kapler stressed that one of the two remaining hires will be a native Spanish speaker. The rest of head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner’s staff could undergo some changes as well. And while Shawon Dunston is a candidate to return as one of the club’s two video replay assistants, those roles have not been finalized, either.

Wonder how old the average owner is? Maybe the coaches should be able to rotate positions just like the players. I hope the coaching staff does a great job. One should sometimes realize that at times, there is some wisdom that comes with aging, and a mix of different ages could be beneficial, as would a mix of genders.

No doubt. I'm curious how the old vets will respond to what appears to be a more intense, more hands-on, more interventionist coaching philosophy, something prospects and rookies are used to but not established players. Not that I'm complaining, the team needs "new-ness." I'm just interested in the dynamic.

Giants got a Rule 5 pitcher named Dany Jimenez. Here's Grant Brisbee's take on him:

Rule 5 pick Jimenez could help the Giants immediately, however. A 25-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, Jimenez split his 2019 season between High-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire in the Blue Jays’ organization. A 6-3 reliever with a plus fastball, Jimenez struck out an eye-opening 93 batters in 59 innings in 2019.

Whoops that was Melissa Lockard (from The Athletic).

There was a PTBNL in the Cozart deal: Garrett Williams (LHP, 7th rounder 2016, AA level).

So that's $13M and a player for Cozart and Will Wilson, the prospect (#15 in the 2019 draft).

If reports are correct, Bumgarner will be a diamondback, and the amount of money looks less than the amount that either Samardjiza or Cueto received. Hate to see him go to another team in our division, but I guess it is better that he went to the Dbacks than to the Dodgers.

Just saw the story. Five years, it seems, was the difference. Giants reportedly offered $17M/yr but only for four years.
