Relief!

SF 4  PIT 1

The Giants even up the series with a win in the getaway game in Pittsburgh. Today the bullpen delivered three scoreless innings to back up another fine performance from Alex Wood who is 5-0 in six starts. The Giants took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 6th when Evan Longoria scored on a wild pitch. Wood batted for himself and made the third out but it paid off with a scoreless bottom half. That left the 7th for Caleb Baragar who gave up a walk but no runs and the 8th for Matt Wisler who was perfect. Mike Yastrzemski bopped a two-run homer in the top of the 9th to pad the lead. Tyler Rogers has been the best Giants reliever this season and he was tabbed for the 9th. He hit the first batter to give us all the heebee-jeebies but only needed nine more pitches to get the final three batters and the save.

Logan Webb opens the series in Cincinnati tomorrow afternoon at 3:40 Pacific.

Go Giants!

After 40 games, almost 1/4 of the season, the Giants are .600 (24-16) and in first place in the NL West.

Mauricio Dubon is not hitting but he is adding lots of value with his glove. He made two superb plays in the field today, throwing behind a runner at third to pick him off and streaking across the infield to grab a foul pop-up.

So far it is starting pitching and defense fueling the Giants. When they get more hitting and of course reliable relief pitching they could go even further.

The defense the last two days has been excellent. I heard an analyst say the giants are good at making the plays they should, but they do not have that much range. I don't know who he has been watching. The defense was excellent. Another reason why it was so difficult to take yesterday's loss, as the defense really flexed their muscles. Seems as if Kapler learner from his mistakes as he went the extra inning with a tired starter, and went with 3 relievers who have been pitching decently. Giants hit a lot of fly balls to the wall in this series. I wonder how many of those shots would have been out in Cincy. Alex Wood did a great job considering he did not quite have his A+ stuff today.
