The Giants really needed a win today and fortunately ace Logan Webb was up to the task. He dominated for seven scoreless frames and was finally chased from the game with two outs in the 8th. He gave up only four hits and one walk while striking out seven (104 pitches). The lineup backed him with a ten-hit attack that featured rookies Grant McCray's first hit and first homer. Rookie Casey Schmitt made an error at second base but had three hits including a two-run blast. It was a 2-0 nail-biter until a three-run rally in the bottom of the 7th. Tyler Rogers got the final out in the 8th and Spencer Bivens had a three-up, three-down 9th.
Tomorrow is an off-day. Then they go to Oakland for two: Saturday and 4:07 and Sunday at 1:07 (PT). Hayden Birdsong and Blake Snell are listed.

Got a new computer!
Ever since I said Webb is not really an Ace but pitches more like a solid 2, starter or a really strong number 3 starter, he has been proving me wrong, as lately he has been pitching more like a true Ace. He should have gotten through the 8th inning, as he got squeezed on that walk in the 8th. Several giants had been called out on worse pitches.
Webb has given up 2 runs in his last 4 games, that's 4 starts and 29 1/3 innings. Alas, I fear it may be too little, too late. The Giants would need a better record than Atlanta because they won the season series, although the Giants won against the Mets. 4 games to 2. The way SD and Ari have been playing (19 of 22 and 18 of 21, respectively) I think they are uncatchable. They might even catch LA. We have to play each team yet 6 times.
Yeah I think you are right. This matchup with the Braves was a big one and they fell flat. There's not enough thump in the lineup and there's not enough pitching after Webb and Snell.
A big hope would be that the Padres and Dbacks cool off and the giants heat up. Or at least the Mets and Atlanta fight it out and the giants sneak in. But of course teams like, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh in the central are still in it. Not to forget about the Cubs. But all those teams should be playing each other. Giants have to find a way to beat the Dbacks and the Pads, which seems like a tall order at the moment.
I think the pitching is the Giants strength, or at least, their future strength. Harrison, Hicks and Birdsong are already way past their previous major league totals, and the relief staff has been so overused that they're spent. But, yeah, not enough thump.
Both Harrison and Birdsong have done really well for rookies! I like the future of our pitching staff, too. Walker and Miller are also rookies. With a nice contingent of young position players emerging (Fitz, Ramos, Wisely, Schmitt, Bailey) things are looking up for the franchise.
The Giants have 13 series remaining in the season, including the 2-game set against the A's that starts today. The rest are 3-game series. 9 of those match-ups feature teams with better records than the Giants.
Have to beat those teams with better records. Part of why the team's pitching is so spent, was having multiple guys starting the season on the 60 day injured list and many were not available until around 100 games. Waiting all that time for Cobb, and then letting him go. Really not sure what they are doing with Luciano, except screwing him up. Last year I still supported Farhan, and thought he had a real plan and knew what he was doing. Now I am not so sure. His constant moves around the edges, and playing musical chairs is just not the way to go. I am getting with the people and the chorus, that would like to see Farhan replaced. That is a turn around for me, but I am onboard with that at this time.
