First to 80

SF 2  OAK 1

The Giants did it again! They came from behind with a late pinch-hit homer to overtake the Athletics and win the game. This time Donovan Solano was the hero and get this: he was pinch-hitting for LaMonte Wade! Only the 2021 Giants can take out a hot hitter and get a positive result. It's weird, but it works. The lineup only had four hits today as Oakland starter Frankie Montas was overpowering. Fortunately Logan Webb was up to the task and also pitched beautifully, allowing only one run in his six frames with seven whiffs. The bullpen was also epic as Dominic Leone, Tyler Rogers, and Jake McGee each threw a scoreless inning to seal the deal. That's four wins in six games against the A's this year.

Apparently this weekend feat by the Giants, getting deficit-erasing pinch-hit homers in the 8th or later in consecutive games, is a record. Cool. The Giants hit six homers in the three games. The A's hit zero homers and you have to credit the pitchers for that.

The Dodgers lose and the Giants push their lead back to 2-1/2 games with their 80th win. The bad news is that Anthony DeSclafani goes to the IL and so does Evan Longoria. Sammy Long and Jay Jackson get the call. Long will probably start Tuesday in New York. It's three games against the Mets before going to Atlanta for the weekend. All three game times at Citi Field are 4:10 Pacific.

Go Giants!

That was Solano's first ever pinch-hit homer.

Being that Solano is not really a power hitter, I am not surprised. The minor injuries are sure taking their toll. Also several players seem to be playing through minor injuries including Bryant, Posey, Crawford and Belt. Seems as if today's players are either more injury prone than players in the past, or because of the financial investment teams make in them, they are overly cautious when even a minor ailment ensues. Even many of Wade's outs are loud. The giants went for the home run ball vs the A's. The A's did a good job hitting against the defense. Luckily for the giants the home run ball was timely and outperformed timely hitting against the defense. The giants kept swinging for the fences and it paid off. So far this year it has paid off more than it has not. The giants hitting with runners in scoring position and less than two outs has been atrocious, except when they go deep. Crawford may be one of the better hitters in that situation, but as a team, this has been a frustrating issue, that so far the team has managed to overcome. At least so far.
