Giants outslug Reds

SF 7  CIN 6

It was a wild game in San Francisco tonight as the Giants overcame early deficits to edge a tough Cincinnati club. Everyone expected a pitchers duel with Kevin Gausman and Luis Castillo but the lineups weren't buying it. The Reds hit two two-run home runs off Gausman in the 1st, both by lefties (Joey Votto and Mike Moustakas). The Giants didn't like being shown up and responded with two two-run home runs of their own, both by lefties (Mike Yastrzemski and Brandon Crawford). Four big flies in the first inning! Eight runs!

The Reds got a two-out hit to make it 5-4 in the next inning but Gausman kept it together and threw four scoreless frames after that. The Giants clawed back in the bottom half of the 6th on Evan Longoria's fourth homer, a Buster Posey single, and an Austin Slater triple. Kap pinch-hit for Gausman with Darin Ruf but could not get the extra run and it was 6-5 going to the 7th. Wandy Peralta had a bad stretch (balk and wild pitch) sandwiched around some bad luck (two dink hits) and the Reds tied it up. Undaunted, the Giants put a couple of walks and a sacrifice fly together to conjure up a run and take a 7-6 lead, and that held up for a big win. Tyler Rogers struck out three in the 8th and Jake McGee struck out two in the 9th to finish it.

It was a breakout night for the bats, especially noteworthy against a tough starter like Castillo. They had eleven hits overall, five for extra-bases, with Tommy La Stella rapping out three from the leadoff spot. They also had four walks, two by Donovan Solano, his first two of the season.

Johnny Cueto gets the start in the rubber match, tomorrow afternoon at 12:45 Pacific.

Go Giants!

LaMonte Wade goes to the 10-day DL and Giants activate his doppelganger, Steven Duggar. Now you know why FZ likes to have two of everything!

Logan Webb goes to the bullpen as the Giants activate LH starter Alex Wood. With Moronta out it is good to have a guy like Webb who can go short or long as needed. Maybe they can tag-team him with Wood who will likely be on a short leash in his first few starts.

Because I am in South Florida, I do not believe that I will be able to get the giants feed for this weekend's games. The Marlin's announcers always seem to know a lot about the giants, but it is just not the same as listening to our guys. Marlins can be tough, I hope our guys come in and get to the Marlins before they can even get started.
