Skunked

SEA 4  SF 0

Nothing but zeroes last night. Seattle starter Chris Flexen and his bullpen mates stymied the Giants hitting attack and the Mariners prevailed. Donovan Solano had two hits of course, but he also struck out twice, and that was the story as the lineup whiffed a total of 12 times. Logan Webb went 5-1/3 and allowed seven hits, three walks, and three runs on 97 pitches (25 batters). Reyes Moronta gave up the final run, a solo shot to the first batter, but otherwise was sharp, and both Matt Wisler and Jose Alvarez pitched well.

On to San Diego where Anthony DeSclafani gets the start Monday night, 7:10 Pacific.

Go Giants!

Once again Brandon Belt showed that he has a better eye than the home plate umpire. Yet that does not matter. After all these years instead of at least fouling off a close pitch with two strikes, the will take the pitch. His other called strike for a K, was right down the middle, and he chose, I suspect in that AB, to look for something, and he guessed wrong. This team definitely needs Yaz, to hit. Has Webb become the new Matt Cain?

With ERAs in the 5 range and FIPs in the 4 range I think he's got something to prove still. I'm excited about his emergence and I think he can be an effective starter but he has to get the hits and the walks down. He did pitch reasonably well, not much worse than Cueto, but his mates didn't help him out. I like that he didn't fall apart when things got a little hairy. He kept it together and kept grinding. That will pay off in the long run.

Yes. His stuff looks good. He like Cain, needs run support.

Last night's game time was officially 2 h and 59 m and that's the shortest game so far. When one team whiffs 12 times the night goes by pretty quick. Belt and Slater accounted for half of them (3 apiece).

I get the emphasis on hitting the ball hard. I understand these guys look for certain pitches and try to kill them. I realize they are optimizing, or trying to optimize, their skills, and at the same time do the most valuable thing for the team.

But the strikeouts get really old, from a fan perspective. I really would like to see more balls in play. I've always like the "crack of the bat" and we hear less of that these days. Or, at least, we hear just as many but a lot more of them are foul balls!

Giants pick up a 27-year old OF with the fabulous moniker of Skye Bolt. He's 27 and had a cup of coffee with the A's in 2019. He plays CF. Pitcher Ashton Goudeau was cut to make a roster spot for Bolt.

Mike Yastrzemski was scratched from today's lineup.
