Nine

SD 7  SF 6 (10)

The Giants wasted a big chance in the top of the 10th and it burned them in the bottom half as the Padres pushed across the winner. An uncharacteristically wild Logan Webb put the team in a 4-0 1st inning hole but they battled back with homers to take a 5-4 lead in the 6th. Back-to-back homers by the Padres re-took the lead but the Giants rallied in the 7th to tie. Alas, they couldn't get it going after that and the home squad prevailed. The Dodgers rallied in Colorado and gained a game, they are one back with nine left to play.

It's off to Denver for three starting tomorrow evening at 5:10 Pacific. Alex Wood gets the start.

GO GIANTS!

The Giants refused to take the walks late in the game when the Pads reliever had little control. The dodgers were handed their 4th run as a gift and the ump tried twice to gift them. First turner their third baseman had a definite strike to get him out called a ball. But he popped out so it was not crucial. Later in the inning with 2 strikes o. POLLACK THE NEXT PITCH WAS RIGHT IN THE STRIKE ZONE not borderline. Then pollack hits a double and a run comes in. With 2 outs in the ninth the rockies imploded. A single, a grounder deflected by the pitcher into a hit. He letsbit go and the game is over as the shortstop was playing right up the middle. Then trey turner gets a seeing eye single to tie it up. The rest is history. I was more upset with the dodgers umpire aided win than with the Giants loss. However the Pads have won only 3 games in the last 2 weeks, all 3 against the Giants.

The Pudres batted around in the first, and Webb used 46 pitches to get 3 outs. But to his credit, he went through the next 3 innings allowing no runs and finished with only 78 pitches. Maybe he should have pitched the 5th.

I think everyone was hoping for six from Webb but after the 1st it was obvious he'd be out earlier. It's not about total pitches, it's about the number of high-stress pitches. And the Giants have erred on the side of caution all season long. Webb has thrown more innings and faced more batters this year than in his two previous stints combined. Despite the rough start he did bounce back, as you say. He's been my favorite pitcher this year.

The key guy was Quintana, if he'd gotten a couple more outs instead of giving up two homers they could have patched the rest of the game together. They had to go to the well too many times and they came up empty. A big hit by Belt or Bryant in the 10th would have made a win much more likely. That was a cruel turn of events--that pitcher was wild and both hitters had 3-1 counts. I was sure the Giants would get a big hit there.
