Open Thread, 9/10/21

I won't be posting for several days. Obviously each game increases in importance as we follow the Giants for these final weeks of the season. I thought we could have an open comment thread following this post and people could chime in on what's happening. I'm not sure when I'll have the opportunity to do my next post but I will be following things.

The Giants play three in Chicago this weekend and then come home for four against San Diego, followed by three against Atlanta. Monday the 20th is an off-day. Today's game is at 11:20 PT.

Be sure to add your two cents!!

GO GIANTS!!

You know I've been excited about Darin Ruf's performance this season and it's not just me. Devan Fink at FanGraphs has a nice story about him.

I see that giants signed a second baseman to a minor league deal. Jose Alifonso. I do not know much about him. Anyone have information on this guy.

Definitive victory over the hapless Cubs (6-1] makes it a 5 game winning streak and lowers the magic number for the playoffs to 5. It looked like Belt had a home made “C” on his jersey. I guess he’s the captain now…anyway he got a homer with it. Cubs got two hits for goodness sake.

Belt's post-game comment: As the alpha-male, I had to take the initiative. Kapler: He's the captain...of something. Belt's either being a goofball or lost a bet.

I have been wondering how many games can the Giants throw and all-bullpen staff. And the answer seems to be, surprisingly many! They threw an 8-pitcher game on the 4th, a 9-pitcher game on the 5th, threw 6 on the 8th (although Disco gave 4 innings) and 8 today. I would have thought that, relievers being what they are, which is by definition not as good as starters, that doing that just couldn't last. But maybe it can! Careful pitch management, and decent matchups, and relievers who are pretty good (even if unheralded) in short situations. The rest they get, perhaps, is enough. Gausman and Gritty tomorrow and Sunday, and then Disco back at home against San Diego.

The Giants crushed the Cubs today (Sat 9/11) for their sixth win in a row, 15-4. Road win #47, which is the second best ever. Tons of highlights of course, I guess La Stella gets the big credit with three hits and 5 rbis, hit one off the scoreboard! Gaus was very solid again, got to strikeout #200. What can one say? This team rocks.

the only problem was that the defense has not been as tight as it had been earlier in the season. If the team wins by 11 runs it probably does not matter. Gausman pitched good enough to have only given up one run. The bums continued to win, so a win on Sunday for the giants will be excellent. Giants hitters took double figure walks on Saturday. Dodgers have been outhit in this series by the Pads but the bums are the ones winning the games.

Our boys complete the perfect road trip with a close 6-5 victory over Chicago today (9/12). I believe they are on pace for 104 wins…crazy.

I'm starting to think the Giants are pretty good.
Flores was excellent, coming off his injury. He might have trouble getting at bats if Longoria and Belt stay healthy and hot.
That's possibly what's most special about this team- everybody gets to take a turn being the hero. Like how we lead the world in total homers but no individual is among the league leaders. That's so cool.

we no longer lead the world in total home runs. Maybe if the giants can hit a few in San Diego they can get the lead back. I do like the way the home run distribution plays throughout the lineup. The Giants came out with their righty lineup yesterday, and looked almost as if they were a different team. No Belt, Crawford, or Wade even as the came became a nail biter. I wondered if Wade was not a bit ailing after he seemed to tweak his side on a swing during Saturday's game.

And the beat goes on…
So many tid bits of joy and SF baseball history… please help out…another highlight circus…

The remarkable Giants clinched their playoff birth with a dominating performance, 9-1 over San Diego (9-13). With their EIGHTH consecutive win, this team is headed toward franchise history. Are we actually going to look back at this as the GOAT season? I’ll leave that to MOC when he returns.

Another highlight smorgasbord: 5 run first, Yaz and Belt back to back jacks; another wonderful bullpen game (will we do that in the post season? Hope so…); Longoria looking like a stud; LaStella becoming a star…

Overload of excellent details. Please add in some of your own. Shit we are very fortunate.
