Sean Manaea

Southpaw Sean Manaea might be familiar to Giants fans as he pitched for the Oakland A's from 2016-2021. Last year he was on the Padres. He's a former first-round pick (#34 in 2013, two picks below Aaron Judge) from Indiana State. He's not Carlos Rodón but he's a solid starter with good track record despite a poor season in 2022. It's a two-year deal (with an opt-out) worth $25M. He turns 31 in February.

So if he has a good season he will opt out, assuming it is the players opt out. And if he has a bad season he will stay. Sounds like a Rodon structured contract. They are only 2 year contracts if the pitcher does poorly, or is injured.

That's why I think the Giants are not likely to sign Rodón. They'd have to commit to too many years. As you say, if Manaea has a good year he will exercise the opt-out and seek a higher salary (or longer deal) as a free agent. Giants could then issue a QO. If he sticks around, great, it's only a one-year agreement (like Joc Pederson), if he leaves, they get a draft pick as compensation.

I wonder if the Giants could lure Rodón with a higher salary for fewer years. Chris Bassitt just signed with Toronto for 3 years and $63M. He was reportedly seeking a 4-5 year deal. Maybe pay Rodón $45M/yr (that's more than Verlander or Scherzer) but for just 3-4 years.

Rodon says he wants 7 years. Anyone wanting a shorter contract would have to go awfully high, I think much higher than the Giants would consider (way above 45). If they couldn't lure Senga (much to my disappointment), who got 5 years without the injury history, they aren't going to lure Rodon.

Ross Stripling is less expensive than Carlos Rodon.

And while I'm at it, if you've read Ken Rosenthal's Dec. 13 article in the Athletic, "Grumbling About Owners Like Mets' Steve Cohen? MLB Needs More of Them", I have one question for Mr. Rosenthal. How much do you pay to get into games? What's that? Nothing, because you're Press? Do you think billionaires got that way be giving away a lot of their money? Hmm, how about it?

Ken, Go Fuck Yourself you sniveling sycophant.
