Cobb and the Kid

SF 6  ARI 2

35-year old Alex Cobb is enjoying the finest seasons of his career in a San Francisco Giants uniform. He threw another great game last night (7-1/3 scoreless frames) and leads the team in bWAR (2.4). He's allowed only ten runs in his eight starts (47-2/3 IP). Backing him up was rookie sensation Casey Schmitt who went 4-for-4 with 3 RBI and is now 8-for-12 with two homers and two doubles matching Willie McCovey's great start in 1959. How's that for a debut? Schmitt, a natural third baseman, has played shortstop with BCraw sidelined and looks like he can handle any spot on the infield. He made a throw last night (92.7 mph) that is second only to O'Neil Cruz who uncorked one earlier in the year at 92.8 mph. The Giants surely need a spark and a homegrown youngster is the ideal candidate. Schmitt was taken in the 2020 draft, Farhan Zaidi's second season at the helm. Last night we saw Cole Waites in relief, he was a 2019 pick. The only other player from that 2019 group to make the majors is Caleb Killian who was part of the Kris Bryant trade.

It's a bullpen game tonight (6:40 PT). John Brebbia will be the opener.

Go Giants!

Of interest I posted on one of the giants sites the day when Casey Schmitt was called up. My post said I hope he can have a start like Willie McCovey did 54 years ago. such a start is long overdue. Some of the people with great starts as a giant whether they were rookies or traded to the giants were McCovey, Gladden, Scutaro, Wynn, and Melky. Time for the next great start. Is manifesting a real thing? Could not be more happy for him. His 4th hit yesterday came with a modicum of luck, but that is part of the game. The giants as a team must have more line drives just foul than any other team. His home run reminded me of one Slater had a few years ago in Arizona. Keep up the great work Casey. I remember McCovey's first game as if it was yesterday. He brought so much excitement to a team that already had Mays and Cepeda.

Webb, Cobb, and TonyD look good. Beyond that, not so much. I don't know about these bullpen games or games when Stripling or Manea give us 2 or 3 innings. If we lose those, which is a reasonable assumption, then we have to win all of the other ones, otherwise we slide further under .500. We're not winning all of the other ones. Wood pitched tonight, maybe he can help. Remember when we thought we had 6 starters? Ha.

Looks as if by July the rotation will have to be Webb, Deslafani, Cobb, Wood, and Harrison. What we do with Manaea and Strippling will be interesting. There is a lot going wrong with Strippling including many corner type pitches which he is not getting this year. His stuff is not good enough if he has to catch too much of the plate. Manaea it seems to me is just lost.

Stripling and Manaea are on two-year deals! They have to figure it out. Striping came up with the Dodgers while Kap and FZ were there so I think they feel like they can "fix" him.

Manaea pitched well for Oakland in 2021. He really does look lost.

Let's hope Wood can get it going.
