Coors Win

SF 7 COL 4
The Giants grind out a getaway win in Colorado with some timely hits and a stalwart bullpen. Derek Holland wasn't great, but following M.C.'s Dictum, he was at least better than the other guy. Once the Giants relievers got a hold of things they put up four zeroes and sealed the deal. Holland got things going in the 1st by giving up a three-run homer to (who else?) Nolan Arenado. The Giants answered with two in the 2nd on hits by Brandon Crawford, Mac Williamson, and Pablo Sandoval with a Jon Gray wild pitch in between. The Rockies pushed it back to 4-2 right away but the Giants answered with two in both the 4th and the 5th with an Evan Longoria triple being the big blow. Buster Posey added an RBI single in the 8th to make it 7-4 and that's how it ended. Reyes Moronta, Tony Watson, Sam Dyson, and Hunter Strickland did the relief work.

The Giants were 2-6 on the trip. They are off tomorrow and then home for six games. Jeff Samardzija goes on the DL and Tyler Beede gets called up. Chris Stratton starts on Friday against the Phillies and Andy Suarez gets Saturday. No word yet on Sunday's starter. There's a chance Madison Bumgarner could start against Arizona on Tuesday.

Go Giants!

Giants Power Past Nats

SF 4 WSH 3
Brandon Belt and Mac Williamson both hit homers tonight to lead the Giants to a gritty win against a tough foe. The Giants scored in the 1st against a shaky Tanner Roark and Belt added his two-run bomb in the 3rd. Ty Blach couldn't hold the 3-0 lead, yielding a three-run homer to Michael Taylor in the 4th, but he put up a zero in the 5th. Reyes Moronta delivered two scoreless frames--he's looked very good--and Mac Williamson hit a solo homer in the 6th and that was enough. Blach's final line was 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 W, 3 K. Moronta was credited with the win, the first of his career. Sam Dyson covered the 8th and Hunter Strickland mowed them down (8 pitches!) in the 9th. That's three saves in three days for Strickland. A team effort to be sure. Two wins in a row against Washington and three wins in a row overall.

Nats über-ace Max Scherzer takes the hill tomorrow afternoon (12:45) against Jeff Samardzija.

GO GIANTS!

Mac & Strat

SF 4 WSH 2
Chris Stratton out-dueled Gio Gonzalez and led the way with a solid 6-2/3 to prevail over the Nationals. Mac Williamson had the big hit, a two-run homer in the 6th that proved to be the difference. Brandon Belt led off the inning with a walk, chasing Gonzalez, and reliever Shawn Kelly coughed up a 464-foot space probe that almost hit the bricks behind the bleachers in right-center. Right-handers don't usually hit opposite-field homers in San Francisco and certainly not ones that deep. Keep on rockin', Mac.

Speaking of rockin', Chris Stratton has logged 31 innings in 2018 with only 19 hits and 9 runs allowed. Like Johnny Cueto he has yet to give up a long ball. Both Evan Longoria and Andrew McCutchen flubbed playable balls (Cutch was charged with an error) in the 6th with one out, putting two on, but Strat pitched out of the jam expertly. It was a big moment in the game, much like Mac's blast. The Giants need that kind of execution up and down the roster.

Two wins in a row, both against good teams. The Giants finally get to double-digits in wins! Ty Blach goes tomorrow. Go Giants!

MacSmackdown

SF 8 LAA 1
The Giants called up the surging Mac Williamson and he did what they were hoping he would do: he hit a two-run homer to kick-start a moribund offense and the Giants walloped the Angels. Andrew Mac-Cutchen also delivered a home run, this one driving in three, and the Giants converted a six-run outburst in the 5th into an 8-1 victory. Jeff Samardzija had his first start of the season after a DL stint and looked good. He allowed only two hits and mostly had good command. In the bottom of the 5th he loaded the bases with three walks but sandwiched enough outs in between to walk off with a clean slate. 21 batters, 80 pitches, 63 Game Score. Reyes Moronta had another strong outing with six up and six down. Pierce Johnson (8th) and Josh Osich (9th) finished up, a Mike Trout homer in the 8th was the only blemish. A big win against a hot club.

Derek Holland tomorrow. Go Giants!

Cain and Giants Whip Dodgers

8-4 win in SF
Lots of things have gone wrong for the San Francisco Giants this season but one of the things that hasn't is Matt Cain. It was easy to think that any faith in the big righty was misplaced; age catches up with all athletes, no matter how accomplished. Somehow The Tennessee Stud has reinvented himself as a curveball pitcher and is getting results I have to think are better than most people expected. I've held out hope all along that the former ace, if healthy, could still pitch in the bigs and get guys out. He's been doing that pretty well so far--tonight was his second fine start against the Dodgers and the fifth time the Giants have won with him on the mound in eight chances. He also put down a sacrifice bunt and got a base hit.

The Giants had a four-run inning in the 4th, their second in two days, and scored eight runs in the game for the second time in two days. Who are these guys? It's an offensive juggernaut! Buster Posey hit another home run and he's now slashing .375/.453/.598 which I think we have to say is acceptable.

Giants get their fourth straight win and are now .500 (7-7) for the month of May.

p.s. Hunter Pence goes on the DL and Mac Williamson gets the call and he responds with two hits, a run scored, and a run batted in. Hey, I'll take it! On the flip side, Cory Gearrin turned a laugher into a save situation with two hits allowed to two batters with two runs scoring. That's 15 hits and 13 walks in 15-2/3 IP with 9 inherited runners out of 14 scoring. Yikes!

Anemic, but Enough for Tonight

Normally, there is a lot to say about Madison Bumgarner when he pitches.  Tonight, there was a story and he was not the headliner.  Mac Williamson was the hero, and almost the goat in the same game.  In the 8th, he hit a go-ahead solo home run with the game tied at 1 each to give the Giants a 2 - 1 lead, and then, in left, had a ball clang off of his glove for an error, putting HanRam (or whatever they call him now) on 2nd to start off the 9th.  That was his first major league home run!

Not that Madbum didn't play a part and pitch well.  Well, although maybe not as well as he had been throwing lately.  Effective, although not efficient.  Madison was matched up against David Price for the Botox, ace against ace.  Madison matched Price, although it took him some effort, like a 30+ pitch 4th inning that limited his night to 6 innings.  In those 6, he threw 101 pitches, struck out 5, walked 1 and gave up 4 hits.  David Price went 8, threw 107 pitches, struck out 7 Giants, walked 2 and only allowed 3 hits.

Price was the only pitcher for Boston.  The Giants, after Bumgarner, used Derek Law for the 7th (1 hit), Cory Gearrin for the 8th (0 hits), and three pitchers to get through the 9th, Casilla, Lopez (1 BB) in a reprise of the Big Papi showdown from last night, and Strickland.  Phew!  Did I mention that the Giants won this one, 2 - 1?  All the scoring was from home runs with the bases empty.  Madbum gave up one to Chris Young in the 4th, and Price gave up one to Brandon Belt in the bottom of the 4th.  Honorable mention to the only other Giant to get a hit on the night, Matt Duffy.

Brandon Belt looked better than I have seen him for awhile.   He looked like he had a clue at the plate and was hitting the ball with authority.  That's necessary, with Pence and Pagan out.

That was, in spite of the fact that Madbum gave us only 6 innings, a beautiful pitching duel.   And you know what makes it even better?  The doggers lost 1 - 0 behind Maeda.  The Giants get a day off before Kershaw and Cueto face off Friday night.
