Happy Tim

Yesterday's extra inning loveliness was a gift from the baseball gods but those of us that follow this crazy game know that things always seem to balance out in the long run. Well, it turns out the long run was one day later as the pesky Padres squeaked by our boys, 1-0.  Jeez, I love a good pitchers duel, but these scores are starting to remind me of the World Cup!
A tough loss for sure but the performance of Tîm Lincecum sure makes it a whole lot easier to take. Seven very solid innings with 4 hits, no runs, 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Great work, no doubt. Tim seemed to be very much in control but more than that, he seemed to be having fun. I saw a few big grins; many more than I remember from last year. That has to be a good thing, right? I can tell you it sure felt good to me. There is nothing better than watching a happy Tîm. Perhaps he and Sanchez are really settling in and getting comfortable with each other.
Very sad throw from Panik; cost us the run and almost broke Hector's arm off.  Yuck.
Aoki sure does make things happen...some of it is pretty scary, but he sure stirs the pot!

Great effort by Tim, so happy to see that. Too bad Morrow was a beast. Affeldt is a stud but sometimes even great pitchers give it up. Poor throw by Panik for sure, a good one would have had the runner. Sets up an awesome rubber match with MadBum and Shields tomorrow!

BCraw made another amazing play. I love that guy.

Bochy lost the game for us in the seventh. He should have bunted Crawford.Because of injury, and Mcgehee struggling a little at the plate.Crawford's batting 5th.He's not an RBI guy.The bats improved.Definitley a mistake not playing for that one run.At the very least. You get two shots at getting at least 1,or maybe two runs.

Solid outing by Lincecum. He probably could have pitched another inning.I think our rotation is gonna surprise people this year. That throw by Panik was weak. His bats not loking good either. He might be feeling the pressure from Duffy trying to get into the starting line up.I'm glad he's playing 1B tomorrow.I hope Susac gets some time at 3B in AAA.We need to get Duffy and Susac's bats in the line up.

BCraw tried to bunt with one strike. Boch likes to give his hitters a chance to get a pitch to drive. At home I think he might bunt there. On the road I was not surprised by that, Boch is pretty conservative about using the sacrifice and I've been hard-pressed to find fault with his tactics these last several seasons.

Bochy's strength is his even keeled personality. The players mention it a lot.The ability to not get to high or low. That being said.We play in a lot of tight ball games.A run last night I think would have gotten the win.Especially with runs being at a premium.

Happy Lincecum Day! Yeah, got the performance I was hoping for, now for another 30+ more! Dominant quality start.

Crawford ins't an RBI guy?!? Out of all MLB shortstops who qualified last season, only four guys had more RBIs than he did. And on an RBI/PA basis, he was third among SS who qualified. And he did that batting 8th, where the bat is often taken out of his hands, because they gave him nothing because the pitcher's coming up next. He's pretty qualified.

Saber studies have shown that sacrifices are not good plays in the vast majority of cases because you do not want to be giving up outs, which is a precious commodity.

And McGehee has a .736 OPS, with high SLG, that's what you want from your 6th hitter, and I would note that is still better than what Sandoval hit last season. But to your point, he has 5 K's in 20 AB, which is bad, but could be struggles, could be SSS. Given that he was hitting well in the spring, I would say a little SSS, a little pressing to prove he belongs here.

Bochy over his career has been a master in close games, accumulating a huge surplus in wins over .500 in one-run games, which I found to be statistically significant at 95% confidence level that he's above .500 in one-run games, whereas the vast majority of managers regress to the .500 mean.

I think he has been an undercover saber too, some of his moves, like not stealing that many bases or using very many sacrifices, are saber rules. And he has kept his best relief pitcher, Affeldt, in the set-up role to use when the situation gets really bad, and Romo to an extent too, except when Casilla faltered.

The critique had to do more with the situation than anything else.Crawford has been swinging it well. The Padres weren't going to give him anything to hit.Mcgehee hits in to a lot of double plays. It was the 7th inning. And,Mcgeehee looks like he's pressing a little. It would have been an easier situational at bat. With runners at second and third. And, less than two outs.
