Giants Led After 1

Let's leave it at that, shall we?  The only reason for this post is to point out that not everyone agrees with Bruce Jenkins.

I don't read The Great Pontificator any more. He's hard to take. Plus, the Chronicle/Gate website is a mess, and the paper we get here in town is not worth buying. I don't miss The Sporting Green, but I do like John Shea and Henry Schulman, they are solid. Nowadays I get most of my Giants news from The Athletic, MLBTR, Roster Resource and the twitter feeds from Baggs, Amy G, etc.

Anyway the Forbes article is mostly how I feel about FZ. I don't think he's some kind of hyperactive mastermind who has it all planned out, however. I think it's more like he has some basic principles that guide his overall approach and it will take some time for the organization to absorb the new ideas. He's never held this role (PoBO) before so to say the we know what his "plan" is because of his time is LA is silly. It's a new team with new problems, it will need new solutions. Yes he will do some of the same things he did in both Oakland and LA, but I think he will carve out his own style in due time. I hope the ownership group gives him the time and support to do what it takes to rebuild the team and get back into contention. It could be several seasons before moves made today pay off, and fans are notoriously impatient. As far as I can tell acting-CEO Rob Dean is in FZ's corner, but things change fast in the game.

If they do not start winning, and I were in Bochy's shoes. I would just step down.

Remember way back when the Giants pitching used to be pretty good? They still have pretty good relief, although they have been relying on them an awful lot lately, and I think the strain is starting to show. The Giants rank 13th of 15 NL teams in runs allowed. Only Colorado and Washington are worse, and both those teams are doing much more poorly than expected. Colorado, however, ranks 6th in runs scored. Washington ranks 9th (and has a poorer record than the Giants, by 1/2 game). The Giants rank 14th.

The giants are not prepared at the start of the game. there has to be something that the starting pitchers can do to be more ready in the first inning, and the top of the line-up must change their first inning approach. A major league team should not always have to wait until the fourth inning for their hitters to show-up. It happens to teams from time to time, but it happens to the giants no matter who starts. This has to be a more systemic problem. It must be addressed. I suppose if the giants started games in the second inning and could just erase the first inning, they probably would be at least a 500 team.
