Unearned runs still count

ATL 9  SF 2
Jeff Samardzija and the Giants had a nightmare 2nd inning that included a botched double play, a runner safe at first after striking out on a wild pitch, and two homers. Baseball bookkeepers called those six runs unearned but I say the team earned every one of them. Derek Holland gave up a three-run homer in relief. Madison Bumgarner goes today at 12:45 PDT.

GO GIANTS!

A good piece on 538 about sliders and curveballs. The technology available to players today is allowing them to customize their pitches and obtain more break (horizontal for the slider, vertical for the curve) by controlling the spin rate and spin axis. These aren't your grandpa's favorite pitchers anymore. These are kids from the video game generation, and they learn fast and make changes before you can catch up with the last one. Let's hope the hitters start figuring out ways to leverage the technology in their favor!

The article mentions that the Giants hired Matt Daniels in the off-season. He was a pitch-guru at Driveline Mechanics, the place big shots go to work on their stuff.
