Showdown series

STL 2  SF 1

The Giants got another fine team pitching effort but the Cardinals did a little better and take the rubber match. St. Louis has a seriously good bullpen. The loss sets up a showdown with the Dodgers with first place in the NL West at stake. The Giants have held the top spot since the last day in May but if the Dodgers win this afternoon in Colorado they will have to share it with their southern rivals. Four games in LA starting tomorrow night, all at 7:10 Pacific.

GO GIANTS! BEAT LA!!

Now is when it gets serious. We need Buster back, and at full strength. We need Belt. We need Longoria. We need Dickerson to achieve his potential. We need Crawford to keep it up. God he's good. I love our starting pitchers right now, especially when Cueto has it working. I'm not sure what "big trade" would make the most difference. I don't go for the armchair GM stuff.

The 'problem' w/ getting all of those guys back is that we'll have nowhere to play some of those who have been filling in so ably. So, I'd say that the non-producers (Dickerson, Slater, Tauchman) are really going to be 'on-the-bubble', & that we'll see a lot of Wade & Ruf as part-time OF's. Flores will end up bouncing all over the Infield. What the Team really needs is some reliable OF hitting help, but it appears that all of those potential moves involve over-priced 'rentals'. Therefore, I'd expect to see more tinkering w/ the Pitching Staff than anything else.

The second game of the ST. Louis series the giants plays with no Longoria, No Crawford (to start), no LaStella, No Belt, no Posey. That is an entire infield. And yet, the winning record continues. The fill ins did exceptionally well, but the back up to our fill ins take us to the next level of depth. We need to take at least 2 of the next 4 games from the bums. No less.

LaStella is another one who may have no role - or, if he does, does Flores?

What a terrible problem to have--too many guys!!

When you have a good team, cutting or re-assigning guys is a painful choice. The Giants have some hard choices coming. The two losses in St Louis were close, hard-fought games. I expect more of the same in LA.

I think both Slater and Dickerson have way under-performed. The team expected more from them. Ruf has really stepped up, as have Wade and Duggar, and I think the OF situation is fine now that Yaz is healthy. Flores is closer to where he was last year, but Solano is not (yet?). La Stella will be a big improvement, assuming he's healthy. Belt back at first and Longoria at third will be another big improvement for the stretch run.

I'd like to see the Giants get another starting pitcher.
