Sweeping into the Break

SF 3  WSN 1

The Giants got a three-run homer from Curt Casali in the 2nd inning and made it stand up for their major league-best 57th win. Kevin Gausman pitched six scoreless but ran into trouble in the 7th, loading the bases with no outs. Dominic Leone got a ground ball from Starlin Castro that looked like it would be a double play but LaMonte Wade dropped the relay at first. A run scored but that was all the Nationals would get. A fly out on a nice play from Steven Duggar and a strikeout ended the threat. Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee did their things and the Giants completed the sweep.

It's the All-Star Break. The next real game will be Friday, July 16th in St. Louis. That will be the 90th game of the season, or five seasonal innings. I'll do another post in the next few days.

GO GIANTS!

Giants had the 14th pick today and they grabbed Will Bendar from Mississippi State, a RH pitcher who was named the outstanding player of the 2021 College World Series. The Bulldogs beat Vanderbilt in the finals.

Whoops it's "Bednar."

The scouting reports on him are very encouraging: excellent fast ball and slider, excellent control, great spin rate. Scouts worry about his not having a first-rate third pitch (changeup) and having an effortful delivery. I have faith that Giant coaching will be able to help him get rid of those problems; obviously, and infinitely more convincingly, so does FZ the Almost-Infallible.

Odd irrelevancy that all three Zaidi draft picks, Bishop, Bailey, Bednar, should have surnames starting with B, just as do the last two pitchers (I think) who were Giants first-rounders, Beede and Bickford. The magic exerted by Bumgarner?

Bednar has a brother who pitches for the Pirates.
